First Post! Cam question
Hi I have a 1989 camaro 305 TBI, it's a brand new motor that has 450 miles on it. It was bored 30 over, and has a mild cam 203/450 203/450. I purchased this motor from s&s remanufacturing, and they told me that the maximum duration would be 220. they also said the maximun lift would be 480. I would like a cam that has more of a noticable idle, not so much so that I have to do any prom tuning though. also would I have to do any tuning with the cam I do have?

You're as far as you can go without requiring tuning. Any further and you're going to start getting a crappy idle, bad gas mileage, ect. You could stand to gain as much as 15-20hp maybe more from your current combo with some tuning. Check out the stickies at the top of the forum for info on how to DIY. With DIY tuning the sky is the limit on cams, as long as the rest of your combo is matched to the cam.

Thanks, I guess I'll stick with what I have and do the Ultimate TBI mods, get a pair of headers and full exhaust. I'm trying to do whatever I can to reach 275 horse power without adding heads, so i can atleast be where stock lt1's are.

Not gonna happen without tuning. TBI's use whats called a speed density injection system. What this does is take a RPM and MAP (manifold air pressure) reading and then goes to a hard coded table and looks up how much fuel to inject. Anything you do to your motor to increase air flow is going to mess up this table, actually the table doesn't change, your motors requirments do. Diy tuning allows you to recalibrate this table and many others to better suite your engines needs.
People have just cranked up their fuel pressure and delt with the crappy mileage and horrible idle, but why when the knowlege to make it drive better than stock is right here on this site, and the burning equipment is only about 150$, there's no reason not to. It's actually going to provide the most HP per dollar of any of your hop items on your list.

awesome thanks, I guess tune, tune, tune is the only smart way to go with these motors.
