engine flooding out
engine flooding out
HI,
I have an 89 firebird with a 305 and TBI.
The car sat for a long time, about 6 months.
I am trying to get it started up again.
it starts up and will run good for about a minute or so, then it just starts flooding out. runs like crap, puffs black smoke, and stalls and won't restart.
If I unplug one of the injectors, the engine will idle; poorly. However as soon as I plug the other injector in, it floods out.
Itdoesen't matter which injector I unplug, but as soon as I plug it back in, it stalls. I watched the injectors on my truck with a similar tbi setup, and it appears that the firebird is sprayhing way more fuel than the turck does.
thanks

Check the coolant temperature sensor. Front of manifold, 2 wires, yellow & black. The sensor may be bad, and/or the connector may be corroded. A corroded connector increases the resistance with the ECM thinking that the engine is colder then it really is, then adds more fuel.

I had a Coolant Temp Sensor go out while driving. My engine ran VERY poorly, puffing white smoke (I could see it in my mirror) for about 10 seconds causing the whole car to jerk violently. It gave me just enough time for me to get to the side of the road before it stalled and refused to restart. I could get it to sputter a bit if I tried to start it holding the throttle open but it would never stay running. Unplug the coolant temp sensor and try to start it and see if there is any change. (watch the injectors while cranking) Plug it back in and try again. Clean up the connections if you can. If there is no change through all over this, change the sensor. I think its about a $10 - $15 part.
