Just installed LT1 + other goodies - Feedback

Just got the engine replaced in my 92 RS. When I picked it up originally the stock L03 had a spun bearing. I picked up another 305 to replace it w/ 081 heads and threw some extra parts at it while the engine was out: LT1 Cam, Turbo City Injector Spacer, SLP 1 5/8 headers, and a 2 1/2 inch Y-pipe.

Currently I'm still on the bone stock computer and tune. The timing is advanced 6* in order for the car to drive. At 0 it would pretty much be undrivable. I have done my research on this over the years, and I'm well aware a tune is required in order for the car to run properly. The car feels very weak right now and seems to be running lean. I run 91 octane. The car is a 5 spd. Right now I can go WOT in 1st and the car doesn't even break the tires loose. When coming to a stop the car will rev down and then stop about 1500, then after a few seconds it will drop back down to normal. The car also occasionally stalls out while taking off from a stop out of 1st (and NO, this is not driver error )

I really hope backing the timing down and dialing the computer in with a custom tune will wake this up into a completely different beast. I will continue to update this thread as progress is made.

The tune will most definetly wake up that setup. The stock tune is setup to feed slug heads and a dead cam. Others have reported the undrivability on stock tune, and then the awesome difference after the custom tune.

Good luck with it. Sounds sweet.

with what you've got, you'll be running close to the limits of the stock pump fairly soon.

you might be able to pull some 61lb injectors off of a 350 tbi from your local junkyard, you could put them on while you're waiting for a tune, could help a bit with the fuel problem.

Update: The car has been tuned.

It runs two times better then it did before. The car was a dog went I first got it back untuned. I'm sure it will take a few more updates to get it dead on, but the car feels great now. I tried out the car with its new found power against my wife's bone stock turbo 02 WRX, and she took the RS by about 1 1/2 - 2 car lengths. (Her car runs about 14.2 - 14.6 stock, so this tells me I'm probably somewhere in the mid to low 15's)

I am going to finish up the motor with the Edelbrock TBI carb legal intake manifold, and the Turbo City 590cfm ported TB, and a half inch spacer. For good measure I will probably upgrade the fuel pump as well. Not sure which fuel pump yet though. I will probably do some port work to the intake as well. Gears and Posi will be added as well later, somewhere in the range of 3.42 - 3.73.

I believe I should be able to meet my goals with the above mods, which is dipping into the 14's.

You do know you'll need to retune once you add those parts right? Then the next time you add some parts another retune will be needed to optimize the ECM for those parts. As you can see this could get expensive quick. You can pick up the tuning equipment for about half the cost of whatever they are charging you at the shop.

Its the old "teach a man to fish" addage. Plus most people love to give the Honda boys a complex when you roll into the track with a laptop plugged into your "antiquated" muscle car.
