In-line pumps, self-priming vs. not

I did my TBI conversion using a Master E2000 in-line pump. I understand it's a boost pump for a Ford application. I haven't really had any problems with it, but I was reading a site where the guy suggested using a Carter pump because it was self priming. I haven't had any trouble yet, but now I'm nervous that if I run out of gas I'll never get going again. I thought lots of people used this particular Master pump, so I'm kind of confused.

What kinds of pumps are people using, and have you made sure they were self-priming?

I ran my van out of gas a couple of times with the Master E2000 and it re-primed every time. My pump was right up on the front of the passenger side and pulled fuel from the back of the van. I never had any issue with it priming. I did however get a fuel starvation problem when I got over about 300 FWHP because the E2000 wants to push fuel, not pull it. I relocated the pump back by the tank, re-hooked the in tank booster pump and the issue went away.

something about a 300+ hp van really disturbs me, you van guys are gettin uppity, what would happen to camaro and firebird reputations if we were constantly getting fried by miniature school buses? or was that you're plan all along! (dramatic music dun don DUHHHH!!!!!!) ahh the combo of a sugar high and a captivated audience....
