winter diet update
well i got my new mini starter today. when they say mini they are serious. i got a csi unit, it weighs 6.5lbs. the stocker weighs nearly 20lbs. this also turned otu to be a timely upgrade as my original 100k mile unit is getting harder to start by the day.

You will be very pleased w/ that starter, Tim. I have a 6 yr old Tilton mini that works as good as the day I bought it, probably the best $180 I ever spent.

AC is 65 lbs
hehe 13s with the stock cam... that would be rad

The impact beams in the doors will easily get your about 70#'s too. When I relocated the battery to the the rear my 60' times went from 2.02' to 1.96' and that was w/ a 2400 convertor and 3.42's. I have a 4000 stall and 4.10's now, I can't wait till the tack opens back up. I have the door beams removed, impact aborbers in the bumpers gone, manual steering, Air cond and power steering delete, Centerline Convo Pros, Harwood hood, full interior, and my car weighs 2910# and 3135# w/ me in it(82 Z28, hardtop)

work has kept me busy from getting too much done. i hafta make a trip to the salvage yard to pick up some things. i did pick up a set of v6 sway bars, compared to my suspension techniques bars, thats prolly a savings of at least 30#'s.
salvage yard shopping:
1. v6 sways
2. manual s-10 sterring rack
3. stock front discs(i have baer track=heavy)
4. v6 springs(help weight transfer)
5. manual hatch release
6. a/c delete heater box setup
7. aluminum impact beams(if i can find 'em)
8. old style alternator bracket(no need to carry that big thing to hold up 1 item)
i am also buying a dry cell battery(save about 20#'s) and relocating it to the back, i have a mini alternator, i will buy an electric water pump, i hafta install my racing seats, chase all the extra wires out of the harness, remove the air bag and put in a normal street wheel, and a bunch of other stuff i can't think of right now.
i will need to come out cutting 1.85 or under 60's to get the mid 13 i want from the stock cam.

I was running 13.29 @ 103.6 (8.39 1/8), w/ the 1.96 60' time, but the 305 probably won't be pulling that hard on the big end. The reason I was only pulling a 1.96 was the fact that I had a 234int / 244exh duration cam, w/ 2400 convertor and a open rearend w/ 3.42 gears. I have added a 4000 convertor, 1.6 rockers, and 4.10's w/ spool. I ran a 7.78 - 1.72 60' at an 1/8 mile track. I beat a friend of mine's Stang on the street, and he runs 12.50's, so now the car is a lot stronger. I am pulling this engine out in a few weeks to put in my new 383. I may run this engine one more time to see how fast it really is. I think you can 13's w/ your car, b/c I got my factory LG4 to 14.19 at 95.8 It had a stock SB w/ ported (by me) #416 heads, L79 (350 hp 327) cam ,Hedman shortys,Performer RPM intake, 600 double pumper, TH350 w/ 2400 convertor, 3.42's. You have much better heads, and a lighter car than did since I hadn't lightened it much then, so high 13's should be acheivable. Good Luck, man, nothin' like kickin Mildly modded LTI's and 5.0's w/ a 305. Trust me on this, though, they won't beleive you when you tell em what it really is, I've been there!!
P.S. I tubular torque arm is probably THE best mod you can buy to hook up a stock chassis F body, I made my own at work, but this is BY FAR the most noticable mod I made to my suspension, I already had Lakewood 90/10's front w/ Moroso Springs, Air Lift Drag Bag (right rear)and Competition Engineering 3 ways on the rear, and when I added the torque arm, the difference was night and day. WELL worth the investment. JMHO

i gotta agree with ya on this, i have a steve spohn arm, panhard bar, control arms, and control arm relocators. the car went from 2.25 60's down to 2.05's. my drag tires got me where i am now, the car will cut 1.97's all day, even when i leave them overinflated. that is with a full autocross suspension on the car.

Have you ever ran that car w/ the exhaust uncapped? When I was running a single exhaust system, I had a cut-out or "Race Readie" welded in right off the Y-pipe (you could take off the wingnuts w/o jacking up the car) and I ran it at the track w/open exhaust. The Y-pipe provided more than adequate backpressure just due to the fact that it still came into 1 pipe. Just another suggestion. Also, using the air bag to preload the right rear spring really works well on our cars. For a great example of a super-fast stock suspension F body, check out Eli Nahed's T/A at www.car-pro.com , he is using the tubular torque arm, tubular LCA, right side air bag set-up and this car looks awesome in action!! He (his company) ground the cam for my 383, and his stock suspension T/A is pulling 9.70's @ 148 w/ 1.39 60' time.

So what model thirdgens came with the aluminum front crash beam? Was it a specific year/model, or do I just have to search and hope I get lucky?

84 and under, the story is, that in 85 the feds increased the frontal crash standards which forced them to go with a steel beam.. thats just what I heard
Ive heard of them being on just about anything 84 and down, but not everything, just gotta be lucky, I know of a guy that found one on his L69 84 Z (I have the same car aswell but it has a steel crash beam)
and I know a guy that found one on a 6 banger (locally, tapped it, it was aluminum allright)
just gotta hit the U pick yards with a magnet
I have to do the same thing

Oooh, good thing I've got a complete '84 front clip on my car! I'll have to check my bumper with a magnet when it gets warmer out

"using the air bag to preload the right rear spring really works well on our cars"
i agree that the air bags work good, but i am a bigger fan of using a preload on a sway bar. as air temp changes the pressure in the bag changes, this means you hafta mess with it at the track to keep the pressure on. with a sway bar as soon as you get it set, it's set. regardless of air temp or anything else the car can only try to twist so far during launch, so it doesn't require adjustment until you either add power or do some other thing that would make the car try to leave harder. the idea is still to leave level, i'm just to lazy to mess with tire pressure and bag pressure.
