New Best ET

I took the RS to the track this weekend and she ran a best 15.03 @ 92.7 This was on a set of M/T ET Streets, no burnout, and 20# of pressure - I tried 22# once but it began to spin that high. I really wanted to break the 14 sec barrier, but this has made me feel pretty good about the car. Next weekend, I'm going to install the the Hedman Hedders and Y pipe that I used to run on the 82. I hoping for 14.80's or maybe .70's since I still have the stock manifolds as of now. For no more than I have done to the car I'm fairly impressed.

I was in the same boat as you, but I kept playing with my launch to get the most takeoff with less spin and finally managed a 14.97. I have learned you can't just powerbrake then dump the throttle, you have to "feather" it somewhat so you don't spin halfway down the track.

way to go basett!!!!!
what convertor do you have in that thing? did you do the aldl lock up that is shown in the tech articles?
i'll bet with a little bit of a burn out you could get the tires to hook at 22#'s. i run my hoosier quick time pros that hi with a very short burn out.
if you can stage really shallow you may be able to get into the 14's just on that little bit of extra roll out.

Thanx guys
Pablo - I haven't checked the head castings. What should # L03 's be and what # are LB9's? That would be sweet if it were. BTW the car ran 15.68 w/only advanced timing-stock air filter, exhaust, coil, and gears, which seemed better than average to me. Also,I saw a discussion earlier on stats, do you think this car would run better with something higher than the 160* I have. I was suggested to run this with the Hypertech chip, so this is why I put it in there.

Tim- I would have tried the burnout w/ #22 but we just ran out of time. I'm hoping w/ a decent burnout, I can go up even more than that. And it is a stock convertor as far as I know. The lady I got the from claimed she had it rebuilt a couple of years ago, and it stalls like a stock convertor.

Everyone- Is anyone running a "short belt" at the track? I know some Mustang guys that run a shorter belt that only turns alternator and water pump. Is anyone doing this on our cars? and if so what belt and routing are you using.

i still run a full belt, one thing i am considering doing is putting a cut out switch on my alternator. one of my friends has an old nova, he said that he takes about.05x off of his et by turning it off. has anyone else heard of this. it seems to be some sort of old school trick.
did you do the ultimate tbi stuff yet? that stuff took me from running 15.9's dead stock to running 15.3's still with the stock 2.73, one legger rear.

the L03 swirl port head castings end in 187 i think (funny isnt that the police code for homicide? makes sense, those heads are the death of performance lol)
the Lb9 heads end in 081

I dont think youd gain much with a short belt, the power steering doesnt sap much power at all when going in a straight line

and i presume youve deleted the smog pump aswell, the AC is basically like a freewheeling pulley when its not on too

I
have installed an open element 14X3" K&N and I moved the IAC away from the engine. I haven't ported or shaved anything yet. I do have a 454TB that I'm going to try soon though. I was going to wait until I changed the heads and cam, but now I'm thinking of seeing how fast I can get the L03 with a stock longblock(that is, of course, it IS an L03, and the local dealer didn't install an LB9)

Oh, and Pablo- funny you saying that about being a die hard racer-- I bought this car, telling my better half that I wanted another Camaro to drive, since I raced the other one!!! She's pissed!! O Well??!!

I can tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt that what you have is no normal L03. Those numbers are closer to LB9 territory. It sounds like you have an LB9 longblock, with the better cam and heads. With your mods on a regular L03 engine, you should be running closer to 15.4-16.0 at 86-88ish MPH. Those 3.42s sure couldn't hurt though.

Yes, I am going to pull a valve cover off to see. I know that the car had a longblock put in it 26,000 miles ago by the original owner, I don't know if maybe the dealer put in an LB9. She didn't specify that, I'm sure, since she knows nothing about cars and she never drove it fast anyway. I can tell you this, when I got the car NOTHING had been taken off, it had the smog junk, cat, stock muffler, stock air cleaner and 2.73's and it would light the tires up from dead stop and even break them loose if it was rolling 5-10 mph. I had an 89 Formula a couple of years ago w/ an LO3 and it was dog, it ran nothing like this car. I outran a guy here in town with a 305 TPI IROC before I even changed anything. That would be nice if I had decent heads, I hope it is an LB9
