Cam gurus: What's a good cam for stock LO3 with exhaust?

On my 89 RS (LO3, T-5), I have a K&N 14x3 open element and will have 1 5/8 TES headers, Catco cat, and Edelbrock cat-back...what's a good cam for my car? Dumb question...does gas mileage decrease when cam lift increases? I think so...in that case, I have a rather frequent 1200 mile commute, so gas mileage is a pretty big deal with me...what cam would be a decent compromise between torque and mileage? This car is my daily driver, but I enjoy the occasional green-light race at WOT as much as the next guy...anyway, since the peanut cam is pretty much the weakest part of the LO3, what cam brings it to life? Thanks, fellas...

------------------
'89 RS LO3- 140,000 miles
14x3 K&N Open Element
Ram Heavy Duty clutch (yes, I think it's great)
Dual .50 caliber machine guns just under ground effects

Coming very soon:
Edelbrock TES (Jet-hot coated)
Catco cat
Edelbrock 3" Cat-back
KYB shocks
Edelbrock Strut Tower Brace
South Side Machine subframe connectors

When your buddy reaches for a 10-pound sledge and says "I think we're gonna have to modify the floor pan, okay?" the answer is NO.

i would suggest getting an intake first, or at least at the same time. the stock manifold is just as big a stumbling block as the cam. comp cams, crane, and lunati all have good grinds for our cars. just keep the lift on the mild side(less than about .460 gross) and the lobe seperation at 112 to 114 and you should be ok. the duration is all up to you, everybody seems to have a little different spin on that.

i think a real good compromise drop in cam would be an LT1 or L98 cam and thats cheap
or something along those lines

gas mileage decreases more with greater duration not lift

Pablo, I know the block is machined for it, but is the peanut cam acually a hydraulic roller?? I've heard several different stories on this, but I KNOW you know. Did GM actually make a 390something lift roller cam?!?

Yes sir it is

and its quite pathetic such that you can tell with your bare eyes that its a crappy cam (if you have any other decent cam next to it)
