advice on rebuilding my engine

i have an '89 plain firebird with 96k miles on it this summer i'd like to rebuild it. most likly using a rebuild kit from a popular company. however i'd like to get a better cam then the famous peanut cam ( as u guys would call it ) better then the 170hp 225 torq ( think that's what it is ) i was just wondering if anyone had suggestions on this. was also wondering if a "better cam" would do much for my car sonsidering everything else is stock.

i guess my goal is to get of the line quicker. i rarely go over the speed limit so overall speed is not really an issue. i just to be able to hang better with my friends '90 tpi firebird ( granted his tires help alot )

thanks a lot

get the lt1 cam, it seems to be a popular upgrade. it works well with the computer because it is a pretty mild cam. From what has been posted here, its a great swap.

It depends on how much you can spend. If you can afford it, a good set of heads like world products s/r torquers are said to be good for 305's. I would also go to a better intake manifold. either a good carb manifold(i think pablo knows the best ones for this) with a TBI adapter or edelbrock's performer TBI. nmaybe a truck TBI too, that will get some more air flowing through your modded engine and you should be pretty quick after all of that. If you are interested in an Edelbrock performer TBI, I will be selling a practically new one in the beginning of the summer probably for around $150, Thats about $75 cheaper than you can get it for.
GOOD LUCK

NO, don't get the edelbrock TBI manifold it sucks!!! Get the Performer carb manifold, a catback and the LT-1 cam and tune your own chip and the tpi guys will be trying to hang with you. 305 rock no matter what anybody says.

Later,
Lars

don't rebuild it unless you have to. my 305 has 154k and there are lots of people with more mile. does it burn a lot of oil? Do you have to add oil a lot between oil changes?

If the shortblock is good you can build on it and put money toward better heads and stuff.
