TBI Timing Procedure
I attempted to do a TPI conversion with no success and I switched back. Now my timing is way off and all I get are flaming backfires out of the throttle body.
I need to know what the proper procedure is for setting timing and which post on my distributor is for the #1 Spark plug? Here's my setup, 1992 Camaro RS 305 TBI with automatic Trans. BTW, I'll have a nice clean TPI setup for sale soon.

Axle/Gears: 9-bolt w/ 3.23's
Follow the #1 spark plug wire to see where it connects.
Disconnect the EST, and set the dist. to around 0 degrees TDC. Maybe 2 deg BTDC. Shut the car down, reconnect the EST, and restart.

I can't even get it to start running at all! Which connector is the EST, is it the one near the A/C connections? And how do I know I'm at top dead center? I'm guessing I'll have to use a timing light right, which I don't have. I also didn't mark the dist. cap when I pulled the wires off, I did mark the wires though, and they're correct. I always seem to do a good job of screwing things up! Thanks for the help and listening to my rant.

You can locate #1 TDC by removing the spark plug and sticking your finger in the #1 cylinder sparkplug hole. Using the appropriate tools (NOT the balancer bolt) turn the motor over and observe when the engine is coming to TDC. If you feel pressure trying to push your finger out, your at #1 TDC. No pressure, #6 TDC. As for the dist., it doesnt really matter so long as the wires are in the right order and the rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder plug wire with the engine at TDC.

Thanks. That was the exact advise a buddy of mine gave me, It worked well. I'm still a few ticks off on timing though as the car is pinging pretty good. I'm going to stop by Autozone tomorrow to have them check it out.
