The 1989 hhotRod article has me thinking

ENGINE
NJ speeder has practical experience that edlebrock performer heads with a performerTBi will get you in the low 14's.
hey NJ, i bet you don't have $5000 sunk into your car like HR did on that Camaro RS.

Pablo Olba has hit mid-low 14's now. i bet you don't have $5000 sunk into your car either.

The dual snorkle air filter assy was a good idea. I give HR kudos for that. if the look of an Open element air cleaner doesn't hurt your eyes though, it is a way cheaper mod and flows WAY more air.

The throttle body in that article was not altered. The chip was altered and the injectors were upped to 350 TBI truck injectors, but that was it.

The most limiting factor they faced were the cam and the heads. For the heads they went with aluminum vette heads. COSTLY choice. Especially when you start reading. The aluminum vette heads flow more air, yes they do, but not that much more air than even a 601 or 553 or 416 head. Still NJ speeder proves that the 197 heads aren't killing us THAT much. Even his cam is the peanut with 1.6's for slightly increased lift.

GEARS
The 3.73 gears were a really dumb idea. Too much gear for our cars. Why? because our cars make good torque. Any time you use smaller venturi area than is optimal for high (6500) rpms you get crisper throttle response and more torque down low. If you look in the sigs of guys for really good times, two things get apparent. 3.23 and 3.42 gears are what you commonly see on 13 second car/drivers. Add in a 2.0 or less 60 ft time and you are cooking. We have adequte torque to pull a 3.23 gear, a 3.08 gear or even a 2.73 gear.

SUSPENSION
upgraded lower control arms ALL have a common part ... they ALL seem to come with poly bushings. Isn't it interesting to you that the RS that HR cured wheel hop on only got poly bushings installed. it is to me. it seem to me the important thing is the bushings more than the LCA's UNTIL you go ver 325 HP or so.

So this is how I see it ...
best low cost TBI F body setup is ...

PAW non drop open Element Air Cleaner $17.00
FRAM or AC DELCO paper element $ 4.00
PST Poly Graphite LCA bushings $20.00
LT4 stock roller camshaft. $134.00
New doouble roller timing chain $48.00
new Stewart water pump $75.00
New Stewart 180 degree Tstat $10.00
New Corvette oil press rlf spring $ 2.00
Performer with EGR $119.00
Custom TBI to sq flg 4BB adaptor $45.00
Gaskets $50.00

under $500.00 and
you now have a better cam, better intake
more oil pressure, better cooling, and a
better takeoff

NEXT $300.
The next $300 should go to get a pair of
nicely rebuilt 081 or 553 casting heads and a pair of used 350PI exhaust manifolds with
Y pipe, new better flow Cat and a 3" intermediate pipe. We need backpressure.

under $800 and
you now have a better cam, better intake
more oil pressure, better cooling, takeoff with less wheelhop, matching exhaust system
and better flowing heads

NEXT $150
The next $150 should go to ignition system upgrades or a chip or chip burning eqpt or better yet TRANNY upgrades if you have an AUTO

under $950 and you ...

Putting in a hp oil pump pressure spring WILL increase your oil pressure but unless you have an old/loose motor, you do NOT NEED IT. Raising oil pressure costs you power!!! In fact, you should run 0-30 Mobil1 along with an oil cooler to get the least pump resistance that you can. IF YOUR MOTOR IS TIGHT, that is. This may sound stupid, but it DOES make a difference, albeit slight.

ya my cousins are from up north and they can only go to the beach(in the water that is) for only 2 or 3 months in the year. The water is still kinda cold down here but we go a lot more than that anyway. I remember one El Nino year we went for a full week in February!

edit. I always forget the r in Feb. till I say it in Greek where you pronounce the R. You pronounce the P in pneumonia too
