305 torquer heads vs. vortecs...

just wonderin which performs better? the torquer heads have 58cc chambers but they are about $750 in jegs...

the vortecs are cheaper but they have to be milled to have the smaller chambers...

so which is worth it money and performance wise...

my income tax check is gonna be $850 this year and i got some $750 saved up so im looking to do some mods...

im installing the headers today...

im wanting to approach the 300hp mark by adding a cam, heads, hooker cat back, catco cat, pulleys, the holley projection intake, spacer, holley tbi, msd, and open element...

ive already got headers and k&n and a flowmaster...

i would say the votecs are the better head overall. how many cc is the standard chamber on them though? how much milling would it take?

Vortec heads stock are 64cc (stock L31 heads). The intake runners are 170cc and valve d. is I:1.94" E:1.50".
The vette heads have 58cc and 163cc intake runners and same valve size, advantage is the aluminum saves weight. Disadvantage is aluminum needs more compression to make the same hp as iron heads. I've read that if you get the heads milled then the intake ports aren't going to line up and so that should also be taken care of. Hope this helps.
All in all I think the vortec heads are the best bang for the buck but maybe not in your case since the need for machine work.

I would use either the vette heads or the 305 torquer. With just a mild cam these heads will flow more than adequate. Plus there a lot less work.

Hot Rod magazine made 325 hp on a 305 with milled L31's, Edelbrock Victor Jr. Intake, Holley 750 double pumper, and Comp Cams XE262H-10 Xtreme energy cam. L31 Heads are great, their combustion chambers are really close those on an LT1 and They flow great too. They put WP torquer 305's on the same engine and made 300 hp.

.045' needs to be milled off the vortecs to keep compression on a 305
