How can I get into 14s with an LO3?
How can I get into 14s with an LO3?
Is it possible for me to make my 92 RS, LO3 a4 run 14s for 1,200?? That's all I really want to spend right now. My car is basically stock, except for open element, and exhaust cutout... Otherwise stock exhaust.
Is there a good combo I could use to get 14s? I'd definitely be impressed if this car could do that. It runs strong, but 14s are much quicker than 16s. (never ran my car in the 1/4 yet though...)
Thanks

never over look drive train (gears TCC shift kit...) With gears alone u will get atleast .5 on the quarter. A TCC will give u another .4 and the shift kit must be good for atleast .1 in the quarter. So now ur car runs a flat 15 and u havent touched ur motor yet. one more small mod and ur car will turn a 14 second pass.

Ummm, I highly doubt by throwing on a shift kit, gears and a tq conveter u can knock off a CLEAN full second of your 1/4 mile. Espically on these cars (unpretictable)
If you only have 1,200 bucks and u want to run 14's then you better know how to do ALL the work yourself. Gears/heads/cam/EVERYTHING.
Secondly you HAVE to have an exaust system if you want to run 14's. You can put all the heads and cam combos you want on, they aren't gonna perform to their ability with a 2.25" exaust system and restrictive exaust manifolds.
Exaust system will run you
300 for cat-back
300 for headers (thats including the gaskets and bolts)
100 or O for a Hi-Flow Cat/Free Flow Cat
----------
Total: 700 or 600 bucks just in an exaust system.
Now your running mid to low 15's MAYBE, like I said, these engines are unprecitable.
Now you got 500 or 600 bucks left. what to spend it on? Well you could just waste it all on heads, but you will never get all the performance u can out of those heads with that intake manifold and that peanut cam. So I would maybe spend the money on a cam and then spend the rest of the drivetrain like Onfine8t9 said. But lets see what that comes too. ANd I hope you know how to do your own torque converter swap (dropping the tranny completely down and you know how to install gears and a posi and a shift kit)
Gears-200.00
Shift Kit-120.00
TC------150-200.00
Posi----100.00 (the SLP take-off posi)
Tranny Fluid---50.00
Gaskets and such--75.00
---------------------
Total: 745-695.00
Which puts u over your limit by 245.00 and can't get a aftermartket cam now and if u couldn't come up with the extra 245.00 then u would have to drop a part like the cat-back or the gears which would then drop your 1/4 mile time by .5 seconds, which u don't want.
Now I didn't do this to break your heart or anything man, I just want you to see that the prices listed above by these guys are ONLY the parts themselves. If u can't put on a torque conveter then add another 300.00 and if u can't do headers, add another 300.00.
And since you are unsure onto what mods can get you into 14's, I am assuming that you are kinda new to these engines or engines themselves.
So just remember that, part=250.00 (cool) gaskets and accessories=50.00-75.00 (oops)
Labor= 100.00-300.00 (yikes) Tools=100.00-300.00 all together (OMG!)
So take those into consideration. Yeah you can get all the parts these guys listed above for under 1200.00. But thats all they are, parts, all them parts need a lot of gaskets and accessories and are very difficult to put in. Exaust work is what is says, exausting. Trannies are a bitch and gears have to be done very precise or u could ruin the 200.00 gears you just paid for. Special tools are needed and if u want to do these mods yourself, ur gonna have to buy the tools which cost more mula.
In conclusion.....CARS ARE EXPENSIVE
Good luck.

the first big thing is the gears. you need a good posi with some 3.73's(can be done for about 550-660). do all of the ultimate tbi stuff, the tc lock up, and beg borrow or steel a good set of tires.you do not in any way need to mess with a cam to get into the 14's. a good tune up with this stuff should put you right on the edge of a 14, all you need then is a good intake. a little exhaust work never hurt any either, i got 2 tenths from just doing a y-pipe and a 3 inch high flow cat.

I just sold my 92 RS LO3. It ran a best of 15.1 with exhaust straight out of cat and hypertech stage II chip and lower 180 degree thermostat. It was a 5-spd too, i miss it some. Got an 1989 project RS now. Soon to be 400sbc with miniram II.
I bet with a cam and ported heads, maybe some 3.73's or 4.10's i coulda been in the low 14's possibly high 13's
