hose that branches off of the stock cold air intake hose and goes into the exhaust manifold? I was up at O'Reilly last night, and it was called a carburetor preheater hose. What is it and what would I do with when I go open element? I'm sorry, I'm a newbie to cars (well, at least working on them), and I'm wanting to put an open element on my car. Thanks.

 

The hose you are talking about funnels heat from the exhaust manifold back into the throttle body in order to heat the engine faster. There is a temperature activated switch which closes the lid on the hose when it gets warm. Replacing the assembly with an open air element will not cause any problems....maybe it will take a bit longer for the car to warm up.

Definitely makes the car warm up a lot longer. Mine takes at least 4 more minutes to warm up in this cold weather then with the stock manifold heating thing.

 

If you use the open air filter you cannot connect the heater tube. Either plug the port on top of the exhaust manifold or better yet, just leave it.

 

Just leave it open and take off the hose? I bought the Edelbrock 14"x3" open air today. $25 at Autozone.
