Need help with cam questions, please answer

Im very illerate when it comes to cams, I guess everyone needs to learn, so if you have patience then please help me out, ive got a 82 Z28 with the 5.0 crossfire.. A couple people told me to get a new cam, it will give me a great noticable diff in power, so this is dumb, but how does it work? whats the differences in cams? what kind should I get? all ive done to my car so far is the fuel chip, headers, super coil, flowmaster exhaust, etc. but I really want a cam, do you know where I can get one? what diff will I notice? let me know guys, thanks so much, any info ya got, spill it out, i love to learn this stuff

cams are really simple as long as you decide to keep them that way. basically all a cam does is open the valves, the differences are how long and how far the valve will be open.
i have heard that crosss fire doesn't compensate for large cams very well. but even a mild aftermarket cam will show an improvement over the stocker.
the easiest way to shop for a cam is to look at the specs that are stated for it. the easiest part to follow for you first cam choice is the "power range" or some similar statement that they usually show. for an engine like yours i would suggest looking for a cam that says it will make power up to about 5000 or 5200 rpm.

hope this helps

go out and buy the new Chevy High Performance. It tells you everything you wanna know and a LOT more about cams and cam selection for your application (yes, even the 305's)........so, that's really your best bet!!
