My '92 camaro now has 2.73 gears and an open rear end. The gas mileage is great but the low end take off is lacking. Will 3.42 gears provide a noticeable acceleration difference? How much would I be looking at for the new gears, a SLP posi, and the install?
150-200 for new gears, 99 for the slp take off, 100 bux installation kit.. anywhere from 200-500 for installation... call around, make sure someone with experience does it. lot of money to blow if they do a $hitty job and u blow your rear

i got a 3.42 from a 88 v6 camaro in my 89 rs.most of the 85-89 v6s are 3.42 and are the same rearends as in the v8s.my car has a lot more get up and go but spins worse.also im turning 2800 at 72 now witch is a little high for me(700r4)ive ordered the slp posi since its on sale for 74 dollars

Just get a rear from a v6 thirdgen.. way cheap, way reliable.. and when you want posi you can buy a powertrax and just install it yourself. This is what i did and im very happy with the setup. You can of course also go with a take off posi unit but the install is much more difficult and if done wrong can ruin your gears

I have 3.42's and the SLP posi, I love them both, I noticed an immediate improvement in acceleration.
I was wondering what speedo gears I need to correct the difference that going from 2.73 to 3.42 did. What nunber amount of teeth on each gear, and what color for each gear would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Mike

Pablo, i have done the same thing, got a 3.42 rear end from a v-6 camaro, but its still peglegged. I've never heard of the powertrax posi for these rearends. Can you tell me where i can get one and how hard the installation is? thanks

Blown305,I just did this two weeks ago.
drive gear is gray-15 tooth PN8642620
driven gear is yellow-41 tooth PN25513048
the driven gear is bigger then the one thats in there now.The shaft that holds the driven gear is mounted off center in its housing.I took the the clamp off the housing and put it back on 180 deg. from where it was and everything fit back together perfect. If this doesnt make sense now dont worry, it will when you have the part in your hand.the whole job took less then 2 hours and I took my time.I used the tech. article on this site.these part numbers will work for 3.42 gears with 245-50-16 tires.good luck

the powertrax is an aftermarket locking type differential. It bolts inplace of the spider and side gears in an open diff. Makes it sort of liek a ratcheting deal. When going straight both wheels are locked. When turning they are disengaged. I like mine although the driveability isnt perfect, the way both tires are locked is. Price is 315
in my opinion, its a bargain compared to all the extra work you need to do to setup a posi rear yourself.. in addition to a few special tools youll need. If you had someone do it for you there would be not contest.. powertrax would win easily
