Good Cam for 305 (L03)

I came across a real good (Jasper) L03 (3 y/o with only 20,000 mi.) that I am going to put in my '88 Formula 5-spd. I know I'll probably get the usual "just go 350" responses, but I was wondering what cam would be good for me. This car is my daily driver, and sees light traffic daily.

A few years ago I was researching cams and was lead towards the CompCams 262. I guess right now that would be my option, along with the ever so popular LT1 cam.

Any other thoughts, suggestions, etc?

My cam in my 350 is almost exatly the same as that CompCams 262 and it's a pretty sweet cam. Sounds good, doesn't really need a stall converter (i'm sure one wouldn't hurt tho) and a pretty good power range!

The ZZ4 cam makes a good cam for a 305 with the proper tuning and support.

So if I went with the CompCams 262 in the 305, and I eventually went 350 then this cam would be perfect, no?

How much tuning are we talking? Will the ZZ4 work well in a 350?

Youll have to redo the VE and spark advance tables as well as make sure your using a good fuel pump. Also, the heads may not take that much lift, so youll have to check that before you install the cam. Youll also need better springs and screw in studs. Might be easier using an LT1 cam or an old school flat tappet without alot of lift, or mod/replace the heads.

For the ZZ4 or the 262? How similar are these two, compared to the LT1?

Agreed. Any cam swap will necessitate chip work but cams with lift near or past .480" lift certianly require valve guide work as well as screw in studs. This can add hundreds to your cost just to run a larger cam. An LT1 cam will work on the stock heads provided you upgrade the valve springs and do some measuring. An LT1 cam is also fairly easy to tune and works great in a daily driven application.
