WARNING...WARNING

If you've already installed an O.E. (who hasen't) or are about too, make sure it clears your ignition coil wires. I didn't see mine and it rubbed through the insulation, shorted the wire, blew a fus. link, and left me with a 15 mile walk home.(damn that sucked). Just to warn u guys. Never heard anyone mention it, so maybe I'm special.

------------------
14X3 o.e., functional formula hood(for sale in future), uhhh..., umm...

Am I the only person who believes a car has feelings, emotions, and a soul??

Mine is fine. I have a drop base one. anyways all I did was got some tin snips and cut a little chunk of the crome out and now the rubber part of my K&N touches the wire sometimes, but its jsut rubber and also I wrapped the wire in a lot of electrical tape.

Thanks for the warning. I've been wanting to install an open element for a couple of months but never got around to it. About to graduate! I've researched and asked many questions but basically have gotten nowhere. I have the LO3 in a 91 Bird with the stock hood. Is there any OE (perferrably a chrome K&N 14X3) that I can replace my old air intake with without having any trouble with clearance for the hood or for the wires or with the bolt? I don't mind a little hassle but I like to have an almost full-proof plan. Not time for imperfections or screw ups right now; maybe after May 26, but not right now. Thanks.

The tech article posted on this site about installing a TBI Open Element Air Filter mentions this. Check it out, it's a fairly detailed article.

I got a Mr Gasket non drop base 14" open air cleaner for 20 bucks. I had to take the spacer off the top of the throttle body and set the new air cleaner on. I have a 14x3 K&N and no clearance probs.

I use the Triangle shaped Edelbrock one.. It comes with a K&n element in it and was only like $50. It is a non drop base but because of it's shape, it has no problems clearing the wire. Installation took me about 10 minutes.. Hardest part was getting the old one off.. Don't forget to buy the vacuum caps..

that is in the tech article because of when that happened to me. while ago. mac was the one who updated it for me.

i drove from fort collins colorado to omaha nebraska. 8hr drive. 540 miles.
no problems

left omaha to finish the trip down to missouri to see my girlfriend after letting the car sit for an hour. 35 minutes out of omaha, my car died at about midnight on interstate 29. which was under construction where the entire car shut off except radio and lights/accessories. i was going about 80mph, had to dodge thru cones to get onto fresh asphault, (thank god it was dry enough) so that i could pull over. mind you i had no power brakes etc...

blew the main fusable links. cost a 90$ tow job, and wasnt able to suprise my girlfriend after skipping thursday and fridays classes to get to her a day earlier than i had told her.

it sucked. al because the aircleaner, rubbed thru the 12v + on the coil.

its in the ultimate tbi page, and it is step 5 of step 2 on my article. sorry you missed that part.

maybe ill make it red or something.
