Why does TBI suck so bad?

Ive asked this question before. With my little 305 TBI, what would be the BIGGEST power adder? I put it in TBI because everyone in POWER ADDER suggests putting a 350 in it. Thats not an option right now.

Why does everyone recommend NOS?
I DO NOT want temporary power as lame as NOS.
I don't drag race so NOS would be useless.
Plus I'd need new parts and such anyway.

you have to look at where it sucks, tbi itself does not suck, the smog controlled engine they put it on sucks, id say port and polish the heads or buy new ones, a new cam(which is the main reason the tbi putters past 4000 rpm) and a new caburater intake manifold with a tbi adapter plate maybe a AFPR too

How difficult would it be to keep the 305 smog-legal after heads and cam modifications?

All of that should run you less than $1700 if you know how to shop. Around $750 for the heads, more if you port and polish them first, SLP headers are even more expensive if you decide to get them coated. There is nothing wrong with TBI. It's a system that can make power and still have good drivability. The problem with our engines is the heads, cam, and exhaust mainly. You can make a 305 run very very fast, but speed cost money. How fast do ya wanna go?

If you are on a budget, use out of the box Vortec heads for about $425 for a pair of them fully assembled... I'm shooting for 400hp with a 350cid, Hot Cam, 454 TBI w/enough injector/FP, 1.6 rockers, Vortec heads, true 2.5" dual exhaust (going in the JEEP) and RMP AirGap manifold. Gonna be hard but I believe it can be done.

I will not stop until I get 400hp, even if I have to switch to FastBurns.

How fast can you afford to go? That's what it boils down to everytime.

How much of the engine stuff can be done without having to burn chips? (i.e. heads injectors and cam) Can these be changed without freaking out the Lo3's computer?
