Timing questions...
I know i have asked this before but didnt get any answers. Im going to bump up the timing but im not sure how far i should go. I have heard +4* is good? I have a 92 RS 305 TBI. Mods..MSD cap, rotor, coil, wires,Bosch platum +4 plugs, 3pc march underdrive pulleys, K&N fliter, flowmaster 80 series muff. I use 89 octane, sometimes premium. What would be the best timing for me? Also will it mess with the knock sensor? I have heard of going 8* to 12* but i think that would be to high for me. Let me know..
With every mod you do, and depending on what gas you use it'll be different. 4* BTDC is just right for mine, but it might not be for yours. The only way to get an answer that's more than a guess is for you to do it the hard way: Advance the timing by 2* and test drive the car. If you hear no knock and if you don't get any bog or power loss, advance it another 2*. Do this till you get knock/pinging or power loss. When you do, retard the timing 1* at a time and drive it again. If it runs good you're done, if not retard it another 1*.
It won't mess with the knock sensor. Advancing timing might cause knock and the sensor will hear this and signal timing to be retarded. Too much advance and the computer won't be able to retard it enough though, that's why you need to go through the trial and error.

I run 6 deg. no problem with premium. I wouldn't go that far if your just going to run the cheap stuff! I agree that timing is specific to engine mods. Experimenting is the only true way to see what works for you. We just give you the range, 4-and up.

Blah. You don't advance the timing until you hear knock.
You get a baseline run with a good performance meter. ie drag strip mph, gtech, Vericom, etc. Repeatable results are important.
Then you advance the timing 2 degrees and check for performance improvement. If the car runs faster, you advance again and check for improved performance. Repeat until performance falls off. Then back timing off 1-2 degrees.
What works for someone else's cars may or may not work for yours. Testing is the only way to get good results.

Or get a scan tool and watch for knock counts! I'm sure you could find a local shop guy with a scanner that he'd have you sign out for like half an hour. If not, ask him after hours if he wants a ride!

I have mine 12 degrees advanced, but I'm investing in MSD adjustable timing control because of my nitrous.
