Okthe manifold is finally sealed with no leaks. Now I can't get the timming right. I tried to retard it a bit but it knocked really bad. I don't have a timming light so this makes it harder. Should I retard it more or advance it??? Any opinions greatly appreciated

If it's knocking, retard the timing. Also double check that the distributor isn't installed a tooth off.

I retarded the timing but now the car runs sooooooo rich and idles at like 2000 rpm and smokes real bad, and has the shakes. What is wrong.

if the idle's going up, and it's starting to knock you're advancing it, not retarding it.

It might be a good idea to pull the distributor out and start again. If you do not know how to set the distr. correctly then let us know and we will help. It's also a good idea to borrow a timing light as well as check your plug wire order. Someting is amiss and a manifold change alone should not have caused this problem.

I was advancing and not retarding afterall. I was told wrong by someone. Anyway I still have problems. I retarded it to get the idle back to around 650 or so but the car is still rich and runs real rough and has the shakes. It hesitates to and feels like I have no power. At one point I reved it a little and say a spurt come out of the throttle body. I was sitting in the drivers seat with the hood up so i am not for sure that is where it came from. When I slid the distributor back in the rotor lined up with my mark on the distributor so I asummed I was back at TDC. Could I be a tooth off o would the car not even run this way. Any how, because i don't have a light I am gonna go get it set tomm morn. Should I ask to have it set at 4 or 6 degrees or something else.
