cam replacement

ok when i go to replace the cam in my LO3 do i NEED to get a hydraulic roller cam and lifters or can i get the cheaper standard hydraulic setup.whenever ive seen the hydraulic roller cams it always says its for 87-up motors, but i would much rather go for the cheaper standard hydraulic cams if i can get away with it.snflupigus told me to go with a comp cams xtreme energy cam 262 grind, and ive only seen that in standard hydraulic form,so im assuming that means the hydraulic will work.thanks for the help guys.

I wouldn't recommend switching to a flat tappet cam. They have a lot more friction which cost HP than same specs on roller. Buy a used LT1 cam if you want more power from stock motor or go with a ZZ4 roller cam if you are going to mess with more parts of motor like heads and intake. These cams don't wear like flat tappet cams and are ok to buy used. Same with the lifters. Just reuse your roller lifters with your new roller cam. You can find either on this board under the classified section or on ebay. You will be happier and your computer will probably thank you too since most roller cams are computer friendly.

I agree, I would stay with the roller cam, you may pay more, but your engine and computer will be much happier. You do want to stay around a 112 lobe center. a 108 or 110 will give your computer trouble. Comp Cams makes some good replacement roller cams. Part # 8-500-8 works with basically stock TBI and has 206-212 duration @.050 and 480-488 lift on a 112 lobe center or you can find a good used roller cam. See what other people say, this is a great forum for advice.

Stick with a roller. By the time you add up the cost of having to replace the timing chain, sprockets, & pushrods to use a flat tappet, it's not gonna be much cheaper that going with a roller replacement.

Hell, if you can find a used LT1 cam, do that. You can reuse your stock lifters & buy a new GM replacement chain & sprockets for $40. PN #12371043. Just make sure the pushrods aren't bent and that the roller lifters aren't sticking and you'll be fine. Oh, and check the springs to. If your pushin' 100k miles, then they are surely worn

Good luck
AJ

Re: cam replacement

Oh yeah, you'll be lucky to even start the car with an LT1 cam and the stock tune. EBL Flash is the way to go.
