Re: 305 tbi buildup

LO3?

With some additional weight reduction and a custom chip I would say you could get into 15's easily.

Whatever it does, I bet it would be fun to drive.

EDIT: Oh... I might have an ET later this summer (it will suck with a 2.73 and non-posi). I drive almost daily and get 17 around town and been to 25 MPG on the road. Stock cam, stock heads

Re: 305 tbi buildup

You forgot one more very vital part of the equation.......TUNING!!!!!!
you'll get nowhere without it believe me.I've gone as far as I can with bolt on's and my car desprately needs a good tune.

Re: 305 tbi buildup

just get the trans go kit.it basically comes with everything you need besides the plunger.I also don't think that it will take you that long to get you what you need.I've only had my car for 3 1/2 and all in my sig is what I aquired for it and more and I'm married with 2 kids.Just be patient and it will come together.

Re: 305 tbi buildup

i wish i knew.i don't feel like driving 100 miles to the nearest drag strip (Las Vegas) until I get the car tuned. My car only weighs 3045 with me in it so I know it should run well as it sits. But due to the fact of a ping on tip in (very audible) I don't want to risk engine failure. As it stands now I have to run 110 octane to not ping at all.

Re: 305 tbi buildup

Your set-up looks pretty good and should provide a nice 50+ hp boost over the stock set-up. A few things to consider.

You could save some money by keeping your stock LO3 heads and porting them. Stock LO3 heads outflow TPI heads on the exhaust side and only slightly behind on the intake side. A little port work goes a long way and won't require you to buy and possibly rebuild a used head (with the exception of new seals and springs when the cam goes in).

I would add a high flow fuel pump to your list. A Walbro 190 unit would be a good economical choice (can be shipped to your door for under $100) and will be able to provide your set-up with the necessary fuel that it will need.

Depending on your final set-up you may not be able to re-use the sock injectors. Having the high flow fuel pump will allow you to crank the fuel pressure but not all LT1 cam set-ups can be fed with the stock injectors. The stock TBI unit on the other hand will be just fine.

I agree with all previous comments on tuning. I realize you are aware of this but it is not a bad idea to get used to tuning on a stock set-up. Practice now on your car so that you can really learn with the safety net of immediatly going back to the stock tune. When you add a cam and combine that without tuning experience the learning curve becomes a lot steeper and typically that is the stage where TBI modders abandon TBI.

Good luck and happy modding! Keep us posted!

Re: 305 tbi buildup

As a reference:
I ran a 14.791 @ 93mph with the following mods
Edelbrock headers, hi flow cat, hooker catback, stamped 1.6 rockers, 3.73s posi rear, crank pulley, 6* timing, off-shelf tbichips.com chip, bunch of suspension mods for traction.
I also added a edelbrock performer TBI intake manifold and probuilt tranny with 2400 stall but wasnt able to get any new times before I sold the car, but it was noticeable faster. I say it was a mid 14 second car with stock heads, cam, and tbi.

Re: 305 tbi buildup

Well if it were me I would have them open up the intake side with a 1.94 valve, 3 angle valve job,Back cut valves, polish the combustion chambers, bowl blend on both exhaust and intake plus clean up all the casting flaws.Just for giggles probably shave them a touch to bump the compression a bit.

Re: 305 tbi buildup

I spent a few years around the LO3 in an 89 RS. If the rear axle is stock and you have an automatic you have a 2.73 rear gear. I now have an 85 Iroc and the stock 10 bolt it had ran 3.42 rear gear. I think you would benefit from a gear that size. It has a much better take off and still gets pretty good MPG. The other thing is the tbi is a speed density system and doesn't take to well to engine mods without tuning. The LO3 is a very reliable powerplant. When I sold mine it had 279,000 original miles on the motor. It also saw 7,000 Rpm's a few times. Didn't make power there but I was trying to blow it up so I had a good excuse to put a 350 in it. Wish you luck. If you have any questions let me know i'll do anything i can to help.
