This might be a dumb question but....

Okay I dont know if this is in the right forum but Im gonna ask anyways, because I dont think there is a "what the hell is that?" forum. Okay I wanna switch to open element on my Camaro, but there is a hose that comes off the left side of the air cleaner and goes down into the valve cover. What the heck is it, and what does it do? I got an 88 Monte Carlo with a 305 and it doesnt have that on it. I just wanna know what it is, and if I put a different air cleaner on, what would I do about the hole that would be in the valve cover from the mystery hose? Thanks in advance.

i believe that hose is just the breather hose for the crankcase.it lets any pressure thats built up in the crankcase to vent out into the aircleaner.its not a neccesity to have it hooked up.you have 2 options on what to do with it.you can either 1)leave the hose off to the side and just stay there or 2)you can go and buy a little chrome breather element to put in place of the hose if you want the it to look better than that ugly hose that would otherwise be sticking out of your valve cover.hope this helps

The hose on the Left(pass side) is the second half of your PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation)system. On the right side (drivers) is the other half, your pcv valve. This system I believe recirclate blow by gases to be reburned to reduce emissions, the pass side sucks air from the cleaner into the pass side valve cover to complete the loop. I would not recommend leaving it as an open hose only because have you ever looked at your breather element in your air cleaner it gets real black and dirty, you don't want that stuff contaminating your system, I would go for the breather element, it will keep s*** out.
