Opinions on this combo PLEASE...

Any educated criticism (or fact unknown to me) will be appreciated.

305 TBI with:
1) ZZ3 cam 208/221 duration 474/510 lift
2) Vortec heads made capable of .600 lift and milled slightly
3) Edelbrock Performer RPM Air-Gap manifold

Aside from things like larger injectors and no EGR from the heads WILL THIS COMBO PHISICALLY run?
This car is soon to be a drag car only when the tags run out next summer so until then it's no holds barred as far as the emissions go.
These are all parts I planned to buy for a larger displacement rebuild next year so I thought I'd slap them on the 305 first and wake it up till the transplant.
Thanks for reading.

its been said that the ZZ4 cam is too wild for the stock ECM. I dunno how the zz3 cam is different. I don't understand the duration part of the cam that well yet.

I've got my GMPP catalog here in front of me and it says the ZZ3 and ZZ4 cam are the same.

I was afraid the 221 duration might be a little too much for the computer myself.

I got the ZZ3 cam a year or two back when they were being sold for dirt cheap as takeouts.

Thats why it's in the equation.
I need to know if the computer is gonna say "I don't think so" when it's all assembled.

No matter what the computer says, I would think that kind of duration would seriously kill the low end torque in your 305. We don't have much torque to start with! You're gonna need really low gears to make the ZZ3 work, and even then you are gonna run out of RPM's to get your max MPH in the 1/4. Just an educated guess.

I think it'll work ok if you want to seriously get into PROM burning. If it was a 350, I'd say go for it. I am running a ZZ4 cam with 1.6 roller rockers on the intake and 1.5 on the exhaust and it runs quite well with a lot of vacuum.. This is with Fast Burn heads, too...

I don't think 208/222 with 112 lobe sep is that big but, I AM NOT A 305 runner. Never owned or built one so listen to someone who has run a ZZ cam. Someone here MUST have, by now???

dmair,
I agree with what you've said and I don't mind lossing some torque for some more mid or upper rpm power.

My car redlines in 1st at about 10mph with my set up which includes 3:73 gears and 315/35/17 inch tires.
Low end torque is all I have at the moment and it fades fast.

I just need to know if the car will run with the new setup listed above without to much headache.

Then go for it, I don't see why it wouldn't work? I think you'll definitely neede to get a chip custom burned though, but that isn't too big a deal. I personally haven't tried it, but everything sounds like it would work together. Am I wrong anyone?

I am no 305 expert but will the valves hit the cylinder walls with that lift??? If not, I'd go for it.
