Code 42 now, whats up?
I know it has to do with the ignition circuit and possibly timing and I did just advance my timing to 4 degrees, but I don't see how advancing it only 4 degrees would cause this error....anyways, how do I get rid of it besides disconnecting the battery.

ello there
I had this same code before i took it in to be daig'd a couple weeks ago
I read 42 at home on my dinky diagnostic machine...which has to do with basically the spark
From what my friend said (the guy at the shop) things that would flag that code would be a damaged plug wire, also said that usually cylinder 8 was the problem, spark control module..Im sure there are more, but i cut him off..
fortunately my problem was found in the spark control module which you will find at the distributor. clean it off, replace it, cheap part. replaced mine with a reman part. works great now

I usually have that code get set off every once in awhile. Ill be driving and when i shift between 2nd and 3rd with strain like going up a hill or flooring it, its sets off code 42. So it automatically retards the timing so i have to turn my car off and start it back up again. Hasnt done it lately "knock on wood".
I had the same problem DEADTREND..last month.
I took it in for a professional diagnostic and the tech listed a few of things that may be the cause:
a damaged plug wire, something wrong with cylinder 8 as that usually is the culprit, a FAULTY SPARK CONTROL MODULE
the latter is what my problem was...replaced it, and my problem was fine...
this MAY NOT be whats causing your issue, but if its a stock module, id recommend changing it out.

not fast....not pretty....but has great potential for both.
