Timing Advanced???

Just wondering why I have to have my timing advanced to about 10 to 12 degrees in order to get my recently swapped 350 to run decent??? It only has a mild cam/headers and an edelbrock intake. Idle quality is good. It will run at 0 degrees but will not accelerate worth a dam. I know It needs tuning bad but still havent got my stuff in the mail yet!!! Does the computer add more fuel if the timing is advanced?? It backfires bad on slight accel if I dont advance the timing. Once advanced the accell is decent but Power is definatley down. Just wondering why advancing the timing would help this problem?? Any helps would be Great!!! I would assume that the power enrichment circuit is in need off modding??

Re: Timing Advanced???

Are you sure you are checking the timing with the plug disconnected? If so, then it might be that your balancer has slipped......or it could be the obvious that it simply needs tuned.

Timing won't effect your fueling any in the computer but will drastically effect how much fuel the engine wants.

Re: Timing Advanced???

Hey thanks for the reply!!!! Yes i did check timing with the computer un hooked!!! Yes Im sure it needs a tune as well. THe weird thing is that it has a lean hesistation/intake backfire with the timing set at 0. But with it set at 8 advanced it doesnt hesitate near as bad or backfire on accell. I have gone over all the basics and the balancer is new, and I also make sure that I was at tdc with the disti and the crank. Any other thoughts. I know a tune is needed but its weird that advancing the timing would make things better??? You would think that it would run richer and better when not advanced. Could the ignition Module or coolant temp sensor cause this?? Thanks for the help and I will let you know when My Moates chip stuff is here

Re: Timing Advanced???

Are you sure you have the right balancer to match your timing tab? Getting balancers and timing tabs mismatched is a fairly common occurrance. There are 2 main locations for each on 3rd gen V8s- the 12:00 position (straight up behind the water pump) and the 1:30 position (next to the driver's side water pump leg). The tab and the balancer must match. The most common mismatch is using an original 305 (TBI) 12:00 position balancer with a 350 1:30 position timing tab. You'll be out by almost 30* and it'll look like it wants the initial advance to be up near the moon to run right.

Re: Timing Advanced???

I had the same issues with my engine. Needed about 8-10 degrees of base advance or it ran like crap. The issue may just be that teh stock spark curve is too weak for your motor.

Re: Timing Advanced???

Yes the Balancer is correct for the engine. It was broken in on a carb in a truck before swapping it over to Tbi. Im going to assume that it needs a timing tune on the chip. It also seems to be lacking in the power department campared to what it ran like on the carb. I guess Ill just have to baby it for a while until I can datalog and get the chip reburned. If anyone has any other ideas please let me know. Its going to be about a month until I get my burner and chip sockets.
