Trans am/Formula Hood work with TBI?
Trans am/Formula Hood work with TBI?
Just wondering if a functional hood with the tea drop scoop from the early trans am, that opened at wot would bolt on and line up with a tbi unit from a 88 firebird? If so what years and model did the functional hoods come on? Thanks

Been there and done that back in '92 with an '88 Formula.
It was pretty trick. I had a factory dual snorkel cold-air intake that I picked up off an '84 Z28 which was fed by two runs from the front of the car to the lower air cleaner piece.
The upper air-cleaner piece or the lid, was from a factory cold air kit out of an '83 T/A. It included the gear that attaches to the tear-drop hood.
There are a number of levers that actuate the open-air valve at the hood. I had to frabricate some parts to make the linkage work with the TBI linkage as well -- the orginal was designed to work with a Q-Jet carb. Later I dispensed with the linkage and mod'd the port so that it was always wide open. In case you are wondering there are built in water drain holes to evacuate water caught by the cold air.
I am a little hazy on the finer details but sure remember what a lift it gave the motor having multiple cold-air sources and I highly recommend this mod. The hard part probably won't be the installation/mod but finding the parts. The T/A stuff is got to be pretty rare by now. I did this almost 10 years ago.

So the top piece from the TA set up with seel up to the tbi aircleaner no probelm, from what I red here, It would just be a matter of hooking it all up. Any one have pictures of one of these on any engine?
Also What kind of cold air inductions do they make for us TBI people. I see the tpi ones all over but not tbi, was going to go open elem but dont whnt the hot air. Anypics of homemade of aftermarket ones would be nice. Thanks Again.

my car had all that sutff but the air cleaner. It leaked, that's probably why the stock l03 air cleaner was on. I just took everything off but the rain gutter under the hood bulge opening. Its a great way to get cold air for the open element
