Help!I got 153 HP on the dyno :(
Alright, I thought I was suppose to at least have around 170, I know it's ten years old but come on. I mean, Ive had a tune up and did some mods. Why was it so low.. My tourqe was up to like 250 though I think.. I have to go back and get the print out.
Anyone else get some numbers like these..
Oh yeah I took out my speaker box for the dyno and im going to the 1/8 mile tonight. Maybe Ill do better on a real track.
Any ideas on how to get my HP up?
Thanks

it is expected to lose 15% from you drivetrain. THe 170 HP rating is that of the Flyweel with all accesories. The Dyno is what you actually put to the rear wheels.
So your actually making 180HP at the fly wheel
HP-HP*.15=153
Hp=180
So your not doing that bad for a LO3 that is basically stock and running through and auto tranny.

Maybe if your car was brand new, in good tune, and the fuel pressure was raised to complement the added mods.
Unfortunately, with unrebuilt L03's, we're fighting time. Modding to increase horsepower, as the cylinder bore out-of-roundness fairy visits our houses in the night.
I'd have to say that 153 RWH isn't too bad.
I'd recommend a new cam, and intake with heads down the line. The usual.

I was making a conservative estimate. It might be 20%
Where then he would be making 191.25hp

Car: 91 RS
Engine: 350tpi comming soon!
Transmission: fixed the 700r4 again!
im actually in the process of doing that now actually.. i picked up a set of the newer 87-92 305 tpi heads that have only 20k on them.. and with them off the car its much easier to replace the vavle springs, rocker arms, stem seals and have them prorted a bit. i would say doing that is much cheaper then buying aftermarket heads for a 350. the tpi heads when im done with prob add just as much as a set of s/r torqer heads would and still smog friendly with alot less of the cost b/c your putting your own labor into it.. total cost of parts about 300 or so by the time im done.. ( got used set of rocker arms coming )

Well I went to test and tune..ran 12 times..
The best time was 10.28 @ 68.47 Reaction was .680 and 60 ft was 2.3
Average of 10.88 @ 67.43
My average ET was low becuase I had a 12sec...
Figured out that have a broken tranny mount.. or i think it is... major wheel spin all night long,
This is without my speaker system too..
Anyone know what I would do in 1/4?

well you ran basically the same time in the 1/8th as i did
,so i will guess around a 15.9-16.1 at 84-86 mph.i ran a 15.89@86 in a run where my 1/8th was 10.22@69.hope this helps!

Yup, the dyno result is correct. My LO5 Caprice pulled 155 after I bought it and before I gave it a much-needed tuneup.
My 1/4 mile last weekend was 16.37. That was with no prep, no practice - just pulled to the line and floored it.

Well I guess low 16 isn't too bad for a 10 year old car with intake and exhaust mods... I would still like better.. Who wouldn't right!
Im thinking of trying to find a 305 5 speed(maybe TPI). Anyone recommed this over my current car...?

cough, adjust fuel pressure, cough cough
sorry, something in my head is saying maybe running lean under WOT. Engines are very sensitive to air fuel ratios and if you're above 14:1 you're probably not making the horsepower you want. Adjust till you see your BLMs at about 126, this will make you run slightly richer. Tune your fuel pressure to your mph, not your et or "butt dyno."
You can do all the mods in the world, run the engine lean and you aren't going anywhere quick.

Well switching to TPI would be way out of my experiance but I will keep it in mind. I also though that the L03's were pretty good on power with the TBI and that didn't hender performance? Maybe im wrong. If I was doing any swapping it would be to a t56, NO im not going 350.
Thanks for the help guys... I get my car back with a corvette servo and poly tranny mount.
Can't wait to test at midnight
Thanks again.

You ran a 10.20 something in the 1/8? That is hard to believe. I run everyweekend at an 1/8 mile track and my WORST time in my lo3 is 9.41. My 60 footers are 1.93's. I have basicly the same mods as you. How is that possible? I know you said that you spun but even so you should be in the 9's. I have only like 180hp the same as you.
Eric
Eric
Do you think I am making my times up? I can scan the slips and post them.. But that would't be worth my time. My 60 ft were 2.3 or worse......That was also my second time dragging...
It is possible that my car is not tunned properly or it's just a bad L03
Nice hood by the way!

Just something I noticed... PLus with your gears, Im sure that alone would make up for my 60 ft and get me in the 9s easy.

The gears yes. That is a big difference. I thought you had those. Sorry about that. Did drop the 60 footers down a good bit. But the ignition and pulleys did nothing. They did not change the et's or the mph at the strip. As far as I know, the chip that was in there when I bought it (ads superchip) Just controlls the temperature. It is not a tuning thing. As far as I know (since it was in there before my mods were done) it does not change fuel curve or spark advance. Please understand that I was NOT disrespecting your car. If you had taken it that way, I apologise. I was just shocked that is all. By the way, another way to get your 60 foot times down without changing to slicks is put on a set of BFGoodrick comp TA ZR's on there. They are like regular tires but are unlike the comp ta drags. I have run both and the regular TA ZR's after spun only once or twice almost DOUBLED my traction over the ta drags. Just a little hint.
Eric

No I was taking no offence, Sorry if I sounded that way... Anyway, I will think about getting some new tires.. And my next mod is lowering my car with eibach lowering kit. Then I will look at getting some tires.
The ones I have are General's? Don't have specific model... But they suck.. They wear really quickly and have no grip... It scares me to drive in the rain.. even with a thirdgen
Thanks again fellas

When you did the dyno run did you look at your BLMs? Hook a scanner up to that biach and make sure your BLMs are below 128. If they aren't you're loosing out on power BIG time. I'm guessing that is your problem, it's the only thing that isn't obvious but makes a big difference. To be more specific, check your BLMs at different MAP values. Most importantly the higher pressure values. I burned an eprom for a friend and his car only had headers and an open element. He's still running lean under WOT and a little too rich at idle. I'm working on a plan to help people with a similar combo, it'll involve a custom eprom of course. Still working on the how to do it, keep it cheap, and not get in any trouble but when I find a way I'll be sure to let it.
Remember, an engine can suck in air but if the ecm doesn't give it enough fuel you are loosing out big time.

I don't mean to sound stupid, But I'm not sure what BLMs stand for. Also when the dyno was being done I had to stand outside the shop so I couldn't see anything until they were done. The printer broke and I didn't get my print out. however im going to go back and get it when their printer is fixed/.. I think you also side something about adjusting the fuel pressure.. I'm not sure how to do that? I don't have a fuel Pressure adjuster that I know of! Thanks
