help me get this TBI 355 running right

Hey everyone,

Well it seems thirdgen is probably one of the only auto forums on the net with people that actually answer questions, so im posting here! Heres my problem:

I have a 355 TBI with a mild build. The motor has ran reliably for about 3 years now but damn its slow. Ived tried everything to get this thing to run correctly and i cant figure it out. Heres what it does:

At WOT engine revs to about 2800-3100rpms and slowly climbs. Engine sounds like it wants to stall or misfire at about 3500-4000rpms. I noticed it acts differently if i leave it in drive or put it into first and 2nd. Putting it in first and second seems to make it misfire at a bit higher rpms.

It can squeal the tires pretty good but giving WOT at anything over 25mph is a joke.

Engine specs:
355 TBI (roller lifters, kept original ones) V8 out of 92 caprice police cruiser
272HR comp cams (.500 gross lift intake and exhaust 215 @ 50)
edelbrock TBI intake
Holley 670cfm intake
Adj fuel reg (ive tried 12-20psi, still runs like garbage)
MSD coil, 8.5mm wires and 6A amp
Hedman headers, 2.5 inch Y with 3 inch exhuast, single 40 series flowmaster, no cat
10:1 comp pistons
Stock 193 cast iron heads with valve job and acid treatment
68P/HR fuel injectors

16168625 ECM (93 model) with custom chip from TBIchips.com
(i used a hyerptech before but not too much difference)

700r4 transmission with 2200 stall, vette servo, trans go shift kit,
3.08 gears in stock 7 5/8 rear

Ive tried to get tunerpro RT to do some data logging but i cant get the damn thing to connect! Ive rebuilt my cable about 5 times and still cant get anything.

Also i noticed something, i cant seem to find a electronic spark control module on the truck anywhere.(maybe my problem?) It looks like the knock sensor just goes straight to the computer. Is that right?? I thought the knock sensor went to that little square module then to the computer. I was trying to verify that the ESC was missing by data logging, im sure that would set of a code.(SES light doesnt work) Maybe its just HIDDEN like crazy, but i cant find it...

If you guys could help me youd make my day.. Ive been working on this thing for years with not much to show for it...

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

It's simple really, mail order tunes just don't work......period. You need to learn to tune your ECM yourself. A proper tune will add anywhere from 50-100 hp, actually I'm surprised that you can even drive the vehicle with as much as you have done to it.

Your 93 ecm is a bit of an oddball in that the ESC module is either integrated into the blue memcal or on a module that is located right beside the ECM. Also the tuning community has pretty much skipped over the early 90's truck ecm's. You can get the deffinition files from tunercat, but I'm not exactly sure which scanner will work for you. You can upgrade to a newer TBI PCM or "downgrade" to an older 747' ecm used in all trucks up to about 89, either of these ecm's have a much larger following and have free definition and ALDL files available to be used in tunerpro (also free). All you need then is a 85$ burner and some chips from Moates.net and you're all set. Check out the come in for a free tune thread in the stickies at the top of the page.

Check out winaldl and see if your ECM is supported, if you can find a scanner that will work with your ECM then getting the definition file from tuner cat might be the most economical solution to being able to tune your ECM.

Actually, a number of guys have switch from the older ecm's to the 8625 pcm. I sure some of them can help, especially with the correct tools (programs) required to log and tune. See the link below:

Ahhhh crap, I'm slippin. Your ECM is the "PCM" I was thinking of. You are looking for the "OD" definition file, and the link that alvan posted is a good summary of why your particular ECM is a good one to use.

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

I run the 8625 pcm in my 93 truck. I could not get an .ads file to datalog correctly with TunerPro RT. I ended up using the $OD code from a 94 truck instead of the $E6 code in the 93. I have had no problems since then.
I have the BJLH bin from the 94 if you need it.

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

Wow you guys actually replied with useful information! I guess im used to the s10 forums where its just a bunch of guys hangin out... I appreciate your replies!

Anyways, Yah that "custom chip" isnt good enough. I should have known better to waste 150 bucks on a chip like that. I mean its not his fault, no one tunes a chip right the first time especially for a motor theyve never seen before or watched..

Im going to order a programmer but im not sure what flash chips are compatiable with my memcal. How can a figure that out? I was going to order the 85 dollar programmer from moates.net, i think one of you suggested that (the BURN1 is it?)

Im under the impression i need the following to program my own chips
TunerPro RT (ive got it reg) for ALDL scanning and actually changing the bins
A programmer (the burn1)
Spare flash chips (not sure which ones work with the 8625 ecm though)
An adapter for the memcals so i can plug it into the programmer (so i dont have to pull the chip off the memcal for reading?)

And of course the proper def for the bin in Tunerpro RT (which i have) and the proper ADS (i think i have the proper one, its for the 94-95 8625's)

Thanks a bunch guys... Oh btw im in new orleans for a wedding (i really dont like this place lol) so i cant do much until i get back on monday. Ill get that ALDL data and ill post it to see what you guys think. But i should have a general idea of what i need to do)

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

The BURN1 will do what you need to do. The chip you need is 27SF512. You do not plug the memcal into the burner, just the flash chip itself. You can use a HDR1 Memcal Header if you want to read your stock bin from the factory memcal though. You will need a G1 memory adapter to put the chip in and piggbacks your memcal on the end. The GP1 package comes with the G1 adapter, 2 -27SF512 chips, and a ZIF socket.

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

The ZIF (zero interference fit) connector allows you to easily plug and pull the chip without messing up the pins.

I'll have to DISagree that it's not Brian's fault.....it's quite the oposite really. He peddals his goods as being the silver bullet for any TBI combo, and then charges way too much for what it is. He leaves his customers with the false impression that one or two datalogs over the net is all thats needed to tune any combo. Never mind the fact that he's making money off of the FREE information provided on these boards...... but I'm not bitter or anything

I agree with all of the above except that ZIF stands for 'Zero Insertion Force' connector....

The EBL shares many of the advancements of the later model TBI PCMs plus some. The TBI PCM will run a computer shift transmission. Both operate very well.

Re: help me get this TBI 355 running right

Man you people are on top of things... Yah i was refering to the HDR1 adapter, getting brian's bin will be a better starting point than the hypertech chip. Ill be getting that stuff ordered on monday so i can get on this.

Thank you guys sooo much.. Ill be frequenting this boards and see if i cant help out. I started really working on cars when i was 18 and now im 22. Ive learned so much and i started at a level of can only change oil. Im still an novice, but i do know a thing or two about cars!
