Experts - New Engine - Oil pan condition - Questions

okay still getting used to the new look on TGO...

now I know that a totally brand new engine needs special break in... but I only started the motor up like 10 times and revved maybe 3k by my machinist... so I drop the pan, cause my crank was knocking my pan. Im replacing with a Moroso oil pan... and heavy duty oil filter...

My question is how dirty my oil should look? what does the inside of a oil pan of a new motor look like?

i have some white stuff to the front of the pan, where the crank was hitting a little bit. looks like white paint... feels like oil. the rest of the pan is clean except for little tiny metal pieces. Ive read that new motors get dirty instantly when started up...

15w-40 Shell Rotella T diesel oil and STP break in oil additive.

when the mechanic took the pan off, here are some pics...

white stuff again, only at front, I think it was where it was knocking... cause only on the front weight of the crank, i saw the same white stuff, but the crank looks good none the less.

okay, now here is the tiny stuff in the very bottom of the oil pan...

ever seen a Mexican tool box? a tub full of tools unsorted... but could find what he needed after 3-6 turns..

I'm just guessing that the white stuff could be the assembly lube running down the front drain holes in the block. Any metal in the pan is bad, you can only hope that it's from the crank hitting the pan. Like I mentioned in the PM keep an eye out for copper particals......they are a sign of bad things.

The only thing you can do is throw the new pan on, change the oil and filter, and keep an eye on things.

Normally the oil will turn dark on a new motor in a few hundred miles, some times you'll get just a hint of sparkle to the oil as you will have some metal particals coming off the cam and what not. I've never seen larger metal particals (big enough to feel between your fingers) without there being something ate up. Like I said, hopefully it's just the oil pan.

thats what I thought, hopefully its just the pan, look how the pan is polished at the front 2nd & 3rd holes, where the crank was hitting the pan... im sure its that. there is no copper material in there at all. I have a heavy duty nappa filter and will use some rotella 15w-40 again with some rotella 30 cause I have 6 qt pan now... also Ill use some more STP oil break in..

Im going to break it in as soon as I get the pan on there, rev at and around 2Krpm for 20 mins...

I do remember having metal on break-in, but it was only slight, and was present in the oil filter only. Its normal to have some fine particulate, even during normal operation as the rings and flat tappet cam generate some fine particals. It shouldnt be alot, though. If it keeps up, then something is very wrong.

dimented the particles were very fine, in the picture I have a bright light shining into the oil. you really cant tell without a light on it. And im certain its from the crank hitting the pan. cause the weights on the 2 front of the crank is slightly grazed. not even noticeable though, but I seen it with the light in there too. the internals from the bottom look good also, with the light in there. Ill take some more pics when I put the new pan on. I also read from a website, that this guy recommends the removal of oil pans after break in, cause of the simple fact its so much stuff people leave back, that a oil change couldn't get. http://mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Re: Experts - New Engine - Oil pan condition - Questions

Why change the oil at 20 miles ?? Doesn't the oil pick up
screen catch the aluminum bits ???
A:It's true that the screen stops the big pieces, but many areas of the engine aren't within the oil filtration system. The oil that is splashed around will circulate metal debris to the lubricated bearing surfaces. For example, transmission gears and their ball bearings are unprotected by the filtration system, and even the cam chain makes a perfect "conveyer belt" to bring metal debris up into the cylinder head !!

A close examination of a new engine will reveal lots of aluminum deposits on steel parts. This aluminum coats and tightens up the clearances of the parts, which creates a loss of power. Most of the time I spend "blueprinting" an engine is actually inspecting every part and "de-aluminizing" them !! I prefer to remove the oil pan and clean the aluminum bits out of a new engine out that way, but a $20 oil change is an easy and inexpensive way to flush the initial particles that come loose in the first miles.

Q: What's the third most common cause of engine problems ???
A:
Not changing the oil soon enough after the engine is first run !!

Change Your Oil Right Away !!

The best thing you can do for your engine is to change your oil and filter after the first 20 miles. Most of the wearing in process happens immediately, creating a lot of metal in the oil. Plus, the amount of leftover machining chips and other crud left behind in the manufacturing process is simply amazing !! You want to flush that stuff out before it gets recycled and embedded in the transmission gears, and oil pump etc...

Why do the manufacturers recommend waiting until 600 miles to flush out all the loose metal ???

This is a good question ...

check his website, he seems to know his stuff..

-----------
Well my question is how many did drop the pan after a new break in from the bottom to top, for inspection?

ok, just looked at the oil pan again today, its really not that dirty as i thought... i guess i got parranoid... but it was very few peices in the pan. the bottom end of the motor still looks great also... we droped the deeper Moroso oil pan on it, and it is quite as can be now... along with some more rotella 15w-40, wix premium filter.... I went ahead and broke the cam in after that. it sounds extremely beastly... with timing and distributor still set to 0!

here a pic of the new pan...
