TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Im running a holley 2bl projection setup on sbc400 .....im trying to stay away from tha inline fuel pump that came with tha unit..Does anybody know of a intank pump (PART# or Specs)that I can run and don't have to worry about upgrading later....also,maybe in tha future im thinking of turbocharging this thing..THKS

Welcome aboard!

Walbro 255 is probably the largest thing you can get in the stock tank. It should be enough to feed 80 PPH injectors at high fuel pressures.

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Ive never had issues with overheating so far running pressures around 30-35 PSI. So long as the pump has sufficient flow it should be ok. The fuel flowing thru the pump is what keeps it cool. IIRC, any walbro that will fit a camaro/firebird/GN application should also work in the TBI application.

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

I know from experience that the vortec chevy trucks are bad about the pumps pulling too hard for the wiring and burning up the little contacts ont the pump side of the wiring harness. I can only imagine how much power it must take to run a Walbro 255 but so far I've yet to have any problems with it and I've had it about a year.

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Hey ..I got a good deal on a Walbro GSS242 (190LHP)so i grab it....I installed it on my truck along wit a new inline filter...might be just me but it feels lazy...I tried playin wit tha fuel pressure but it feels lazy...Off idle could be a lil better ,but mid-range sucks...The more i floor it tha more it lays over..when i bag off throttle it seems to catch up....Do i need to play around wit tha TPS (0.63) or fuel pressure..?

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Sounds like the pump is doing what its supposed to do. It may be going way rich. Does it blow smoke?

NO...I hav a A/F meter n it barely hits tha green at wot maybe two green bars....Does tha air box play a mayjor role...?How much fuel psi n tps setting at idle...?I heard that Hollys projection system only allow tha fuel pump to get low voltage until it **** *** off of idle....

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Whats the fuel pressure look like? Does the holley system control the fuel pump directly, or via a relay?

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

I just got a "similar" Walbro 190 from XtremEFI on ebay for $50. I heard that edelbrock and some others are the same as Walbro, with their name on it and a larger price. Seems to work good so far.

Not sure, but if you plan on using NOS, I would think that the 255 may be necessary.

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Does it hold that pressure under heavy load? Also, did you readjust the pressure? The reason I say this is that the holley pods are of rather poor construction. Some of the passages aren't completly drilled out and theres alot of flash blocking the return flow. On mine, I had to port out the passages in the pod to get a somewhat steady fuel pressure. With it stock, the pump was pushing 11-12 PSI thru the pod with no regulator at all, which means that to a good extent, the pressure was unregulated. Its possible that as soon as you hit the throttle, the fuel has an alternate path out the injectors and the pressure craters.

I haven't did any porting..I turned my reg all tha way in until it stoped, then I bagged out 3 (18psi) turns..From dead stop truck accelerates good at half throttle ,but when u floor it bogs....So I bagged out 1 (15psi) more turn and tha take-off got sluggish , but tha high end picked up......I think im about to but my stock pump back in...

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Before yanking the pump out and putting in the junk stock one back in, what does teh pressure do? Is it steady or does it vary? Using teh stock pump will be little more then a band-aid solution. If the fuel pressure is steady, then you need to do some tuning. If it varies, then you need to clean up the injector pod so the fuel can flow more freely through it, or use a GM high pressure pod (assuming all is well with the pump). The GM hi-press pod is the better of the stock injector pods as it has enlarged passages for the use of high pressure/higher flow pumps

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

Yeah fuel psi is steady.an I checked my TPS n saw that it was 0.71 V @ idle..I tried to set it to 0.63 but it wouldnt run that low, goes real lean.Tha only way it idles smooth is at 0.75 v.....Its lik it needs more fuel at Ilde...
What do i need to do to my fuel pod

Re: TBI Fuel Pump (Q)

IF the fuel pressure remains steady under idle, light, and heavy throttle, then the pod is OK for now, and your problem is elsewhere. Have you done much tuning?
