Intake manifold Replace

If I have to replace my intake manifold on my 305 tbi or remove it & clean it out because its clogged with carbon buildup, any special things that i need to do before putting it back on?

I've read u shoud use silocone along the back & front.
Does the gasket set not come with gaskets for the back & front?
Also do put some silocone on the gasket between the head & intake?
Also do i just use carb cleaner to clean the intake?
Also while i have the intake off is there anything else i shoud do or replace?
Has anyone ever known of the intake holes in the heads to stop up?

Re: Intake manifold Replace

It wouldnt be worth it to remove it just to clean it. Replace it with an Edelbrock TBI manifold for bit more power.

Re: Intake manifold Replace

you will love the extra power for a couple of $$$
as far as the intake gasket set,it does come with the gaskets for thefront and rear of the intake but they always seem to leak so by using an 1/8" bead along the ridge in-place of the gaskets are the fix.even chevy does this for leaking intakes they have this killer sealer that they use to prevent this from occuring again

Re: Intake manifold Replace

Check out the "LT1 cam swap" sticky at the top of this forum. In there you will find good instructions on replacing the intake. Key points are to have every mating surface as clean as possible. There cannot be any old gasket material left behind. I don't use the gaskets that come with a new intake. I have had too many sets go bad. A qood Felpro or Mr Gasket (or any other good aftermarket brand) gasket is what you want. Do not use the supplied rubber china wall gaskets (the little black strips they give you for the front and rear of the intake). Use a solid 3/8" bead or RTV that slightly overlaps the gasket tabs on the heads. Take a pencil and break it into four sections. Stick the four pieces into the forward and rear most bolt holes in the head and slide your gasket into place. This will hold the gasket in place as you set the intake down. The pieces will then slide up through the intake bolt holes and you will be assured that the gaskets did not slide down into the lifter valley (which is annoying) when you lay the manifold on. Use a little thread sealer on the intake bolts and get a few in before you remove the pencil pieces. Torque to 15 to 25 ft lbs or so and then reinstal your distributor and set your timing.
