Fuel Pump & Pressure
Fuel Pump & Pressure
My car is stalling, surging, & just runs ruff most of the time,
I have a new tps, cts, egr valve, fuel filter, coil, 02, plugs & wires. I've also checked the output of the map sensor & it is absolutely within specs.
I have a code 44 (lean condition), I've reset the ecm & the code keeps coming back. I replaced the fuel pump about 120,000 miles ago because it just completely died. It is also hard to start after it has set for a few hours.
After it has been driven, it will start just fine, but still at any time may start to cut in & out. The fuel pump comes on after u turn on the ignition, & fuel is spraying as u try to start the car.
The funny thing is, although fuel sprays in the conel shape & it appears to spray fine without interuption, it still wont start rite up in the morning. If I spray carb cleaner into the tbi in the morning, it will start rite up every time.
My question is could the fuel pump work, but loses pressure intermittently like that. I always thought it either worked or didn't. Also could it be the injectors? I don't have a fuel pressure gage, anyone know how to make one??

Bakerstreet,
it sounds like a bad fuel pump to me. If you havent changed your fuel filter recently it could be that also. You can rent a guage from most ap stores...you want to see 11psi or so. pumps often "work" as they fail. Typical symptoms are hard starts, stumbling, hesitating, intermitent, boggs or stumbling while accelerating quickly.

Re: Fuel Pump & Pressure
ill bet if you disconnect the lines from the tbi and feed them off to the side, like not in your engine bay, and crank the car you'll see that its not giving out the same volume of fuel as a new pump would. Mines doing the same thing, we routed the fuel off to the side with a mac fuel pressure gauge, tried the pressure test and it didn't really work so we checked the volume and low and behold....its going out. As far as the exhaust you dont have to cut it, just disconnect it at the flanges, i'm taking mine off at the cat and just pullin it off the hangers then droppin the rear and pullin the tank, lots of work but atleast it will fix my car
OH and 120,000 sounds about fair to me lol, mines only got 92,750 on the new engine and pump and its crapping out already lol

Re: Fuel Pump & Pressure
My pump was changed by the dealer before I had the new 350 motor put in and makes all kinds of groaning sounds after a hard run when shutting the engine down. I have Walbro 190 fuel pump going when I'm finish with the 4th gen rear to be installed.
