I have this cam in my 88 TA with shorty headers with no cat and smog pump. It seems to idle smooth with the timing set at 8deg btdc. However i can sometimes smell gas at idle and wondering if it could run better. I would appreciate some suggestions or if someone has used this cam recently.

 

That cam is about the same as a stock L-98 cam, and just a smigen smaller than a LT-1 cam.

Any cam other than stock REQUIRES retuning to take full advantage. In most cases it's required to just get out of the driveway. Any funky AFR issues at idle or otherwise can easily be tuned out.

If I were you I would learn to burn your own proms as mail order tunes are junk. Once you can tune I would look for something in the 214-218 range. Should make power to just shy of 6k and with the proper bolt ons (headers, exhaust, intake) get you into the 13's. Considering you run high 16's stock thats not too bad.

i would figure it would need a re tune also, its pretty bigger than stock

 

in fact i ran all summer with this cam at times it would idle smooth when cold until it warmed up then it would run a little choppy. I managed to link this to a vaccum port for the thermac on the tbi unit that I plugged when I upgraded to an open element. Thus it seemed to run smoother when I just left this vaccum port open to suck in a little more air. I tested all sensors with a sensor probe and found everything ok. At this point from expierience I figuired that I should maybee change the ignition module. Luckily I got one from a local boneyard for 10 bucks and it seemed to run much smoother. Lastly I ran winaldl and got nothing out of the ordinary(ie: no trouble codes, no rich or lean flags). Anyone ever have this kind of problem with a cam swap. I would appreciate some recommendations!!!!

 

sounds like its doing better, alot of people knock the send off chips, but www.tbichips.com has a real good guy..... can talk to him give him your mods, what you got your timing set at and you cam card, because tuning your own, well i dont know but it looks a little...........over whelming, i dont know why, hell i can rebuild a motor all day long, work on my PC (somewhat better than most not as good as some ) plus all i have is 2 desk top computers....have you thought of going with an accel or MSD ign mod??


you said you left a vac port open and it seems to run smoother?? thats really odd, because with a bigger cam you lose some vac to start with, thats just odd, i wouldnt expect that

you also said you can smell some gas, do you have a cat??, because if you dont that can be some of that smell, i got that somewhat, just reminds me of the smell of any car/truck with no cat

 

I also have an 88 trans am w/ a l03 305 engine. I want a cam that has a rough idle cause i plan on putting votec heads and intake on my car. any suggestions?

 

There's really no getting around tuning the car yourself if you want to get into some serious power gains. I just got my EBL flash last week and I'm just waiting for a new laptop battery and then the tuning shall begin. I plan on getting a zeitronix wideband to complete my package.
