vortec swap

I want to make sure that I am on the right track. I have been reading a lot here on this forum and others and think I have a plan together now. I have an 70 k mile 88 K1500 5.7 with a 700r4 and 3.42 gears and stock size tires. Truck engines require the same stuff as birds dont they?? So far I have removed the restriction in the air snorkel, added the ultimate TBI mods, a TBI spacer, injector pod spacer, AFPR mod and fuel pressure is at 13 psi. The tranny was rebuilt with red clutches, a 2200 rpm stall and a good tune up. Everything else is stock.

My plan is to add an air gap intake with a TBI adaptor plate, vortech heads with some light port clean up, a set of long tube headers with a high flow cat and cat back system. Abd of course a tune. I most likely will do away with the EGR and air pump, we dont have emission testing here. while changing heads I will also change the cam. I don’t know if I can use a roller or not, (most likely not)I wont know that until I get in there.
Other than the fuel pump, and maybe larger injectors, is there anything I am missing? I have read the gears need changed, that’s just not in the budget for now. Cant I just run in 3rd on the highway to get the RPM up?

What will all this do to my mileage?

Will I have an issue mounting the throttle linkage on the new manifold?
Thanks for all the help... this is a great board.

Re: vortec swap

GMPP makes a vortec intake for tbi... I think that may be a better choice of intakes. Tuning is going to take a bit, but your plan sounds good. TBI seems a decent choice for low end, you may want to stay kind of small with the cam. About a 262 will work good with the gears and stall. Cam companies can be more specific with specs based on specific applications.

Mileage will depend on the cam and driving. With more power people tend to drive faster. With a reasonable street cam mileage may just improve.

Re: vortec swap

x2 on the intake, I wouldn't use an air gap with a tbi. I have a GMPP vortec 4bbl intake with an adapter plate, non-heating intake, and the AE is a **** to tune!

Re: vortec swap

I agree with liquidh8 on the Air Gap Intake. I have one on my 350 TBI and it was a bear to tune and it still is not great. I'm switching to the Performer RPM when weather clears up.
I think that Crane Cam "CRN-114132 is a good cam for your TBI setup. It is a flat tappett cam and cost at Summitt Racing is $165.00 for cam & lifters. You can get a similar Comp Cam & Lifters a little cheaper, but it may not be as Computer Compatible.
