I have money to burn and want to beef up the intake because I already have hooker comps headers, hooker y-pipe and dynomax cat back on my '92 305 camaro.

Any way to get an intake system on the TBI, a place to buy them? Or how about a new throttle body?... or anything to help it breath any better?

Your throttle body inst a restriction for you yet. Worry about getting better flowing heads and a decent cam, and then you will want to invest in a good carburated intake manifold, and an adapter plate so you can put your TBI on it.

But any of that will require tuning. From what I understand, even if you were to throw a larger TB on your car now, it would just run rough. The Speed Density computer uses set values to calculate airflow and fueling, and if you change parts that affect that, without re-tuning for them, you will actually be worse off.

 

i wouldnt do what im doing unless you are prepared to DIY tune... but i love it!

 

Hmm... well I dont know how to tune myself, but would a new chip do the job? And also, what exactly did you do?

You can get a drimil bit for about 5$ and open up your stock tbi a little, do all your ultimate tbi mods, or you could go with a holly unit, or one of the high flo gm units, and those dont require a chip to run, but a good chip will get the most out of them. If you want to order a chip be careful where you get it from.

 

first mods to a tbi car(this has been covered HUNDREDS of times) is full exhaust from the heads to the tailpipe.headers,y,cat,catback. do yourself a favor and learn to diy tune. you will be much happier. as a side note full diy tuning on a fully stock engine, i mean fully stock exhaust and not even an open element, was worth 20 Hp and 30 lb ft on my 305 caprice with 262,000 miles. was a totally different animal after a dual exhaust upgrade with shorty headers.

 

This is my thoughts on the upgrades, I already have the full exhaust:Hooker headers and y-pipe and a dynomax exhaust system. I want to get an open element air filter, turn up the fuel injection to like 10 1/2 psi, pulley kit, 160 thermostat, and a chip. Do you think that will give some gains? Any other ideas? I know that later I want to get some new heads and a manifold.

Also, whats a good chip to buy?

for the intake you can buy a Edelbrock manifold which seems to be the popular manifold of choice. Get a open element for sure but also look at getting a K&N filter lid for your open element. I will add a couple sites I have about the filter top and an upgraded TB later.

Your plans are good and are on track to getting the most we can out of our LO3's.

Yourself? Or a transmission shop? If you attempt that yourself you need to be very experienced, have dropped a few transmissions in your days, and know a fair amount about fabrication, also have a shop and good collection of tools. If you have it done it can run anywhere from 3000 to 6000$. I've looked into this many. many, many times. If you realy want a manual car, buy one with a manual in it.

 

Thats what I have been told, but I don't want to let this camaro go. It only has 46k original miles on it, and is in awesome condition! I just want that 5 speed in there real bad... but that is a ton of money to drop into the car that could be put to something, or just about anything else on the car for that matter.

 

Yea I hate it man I really do cause after I got my car I realized how bad I wanted a 6speed. Dont get rid of the car, with the right parts you can easily make that auto perform very well. My b&m stage 2 kit, rear swap, and 2400 stall dropped my cars 0-60mph from an 8.3 to a 7.5. Still not a manual, but I am more than pleased with it. I will eventually get a 5speed thirdgen, and swap the t5 for a tko6 but untill then, the auto will have to do.

 

I figure the next camaro I get will have to be a 5/6 speed. Its all around a more drivable car. But like you said, Ill probably just keep it and fix her up nice so it will preform well. Where did you get your B&M shift kit from?

 

I had a local shop called transmission specialist order and install it. At the time I was having serious problems, wouldnt go into 3rd or 4th. They ordered it, instald it, and a transgo cooler for 1400$, a bit pricey but I trust them and its made an enormous difference.

 

if you really want a 5 speed, it would be easier getting a parts car. the efi is not conneected to an auto except for the lock-up. if you just take you time, and write down or photograph where everything goes, then the swap goes a lot easier. from another 3rd gen there shouldn't even be any frabricting involved.
i am about to get a 93 lt1 parts car, and swap the 6 speed into my car. it takes a while to do it right, but it's worth the effort.

 

I am on the fence right now. I found a place where I can pick up all the needed parts from a donor, so I would not have to fabricate, however, I have never done it before. Thats the problem. I dont want to try my hand at it and jack it all up so if I do the swap it will be at the end of summer so I can drive it all summer haha

 

There are very good write up's on the transmission board by quite a few members, isn't that hard from what I am told, just a little time consuming....

 

No, its not that hard, IF you have the tools/working area, and a parts car, wich you see imho, you might as well just buy a manual car, and you cant just go from puting on an open element breather to swapping a auto to a manual, dont fool yourself. I used to work at a junk yard and I had to drop a few transmissions myself, Ive seen the differences in manual fbodys, and auto fbodys, although its doable, very unpractical for a beginner.

 

A T5 install for $3000-$6000? That's of course a scam.

It takes only a few hours to put the T5 in. There are MANY articles on it on all the 3rdgen websites, I have one too. If you have never done it, calculate a better part of the weekend for this project.

If you feel like tackling it yourself, read a lot about it first to familiarize yourself with all the parts and places.
After you're done, you'll be asking yourself "and why haven't I done this sooner?" I know I did.

No, its not any scam, look at it like this, the t5 itself remanufactured can cost 2g then add 2 days of labor, you easily have 3g. They're going to charge you for labor, and parts, wich is everything from the shifter *** to the trans mount. Anyways, Ive been thinking about this swap alot, and Ive deciced that during the 3 weeks I have between summer classes and the end of this semester, but also after my tpi swap, Im going to look around at my local u pull it for all the parts to do instal it, I know im looking for a t5, but if there arnt any fbody t5s out there, is there any other gm vehicle that uses the same t5, like maybe a late 80s early 90s gm truck?

 

yea im in the process of installing my t-5 in my car. i got a good trade for all the parts i needed. i did alot of reading and now ive got my motor and trans out of the car, got the pedals in now im just trying to figure out how im going to go about putting a tbi unit on my 72' 355 motor that i had previously had a carb on but want the reliability of starting up without pumping the damn car lol. but im excited about the swap myself.
