New Guy with Hardware Questions
New Guy with Hardware Questions
G'day all - Donovan from New Zealand here. Great board, taught me a s**t load about TBI systems.
I'm looking for some help to understand exactly what I need to convert this:
70's 350 rebuilt engine, lumpy cam, 600cfm holley, 310HP at rear wheels of a landcruiser FJ40.
She runs like a dream but cold starts, throttle response, and running on angles are a bit of a problem for me. I'd like to convert to TBI and i've got the chance to buy the following system but I believe i'll need to upgrade the TB.
It's a stock TBI unit from a 350, comes with wiring, ECM, intake with centre holes slotted, distributer etc.
Picture here:
So i'm thinking i'll go for e 454 TBI body, bore out the intake, buy a solid fuel pump, and maybe an EBL - is this all that's required?
The guy who's selling it thinks that there is no need for a O2 sensor, VSS, knock, or oil pressure, is that true? I'm thinking no...
Thanks a lot, this board is great.

Welcome to tbi!
you will definately want a vss, knock, and oil switch for the ecm. The stock tbi should be fine for 300 whp, don't bore out the intake its not worth it, id buy the tbi to carb manifold adaptor plate or make one.Modify The regulator to make it adjustable, or buy one. set fuel pressure to 13 psi. The lumpy cam will be a bear to tune for (if this is your first tbi to tune). It probably wont run very well and you'll wish you stayed carb . it has to do with overlap and vacuum for the map sensor. If you don't tune it. ebl upgrade will save a ton of time tuning. if you have headers add the bung for the o2 sensor and put a 3 wire in it. the fuel system will need to be upgraded to a 10-20 psi system with a 3/8 feed and 5/16 return(10mm and 8mm). ive probably forgot something. so post up more info. oh yeah, what trans are you running?, gears tire size, etc.

Thanks for the info, that all makes sense.
I'm running the 4-speed manual toyota trans, but this will be upgraded to a 5 speed when time allows. Tires are 35", lock rite rear diff, LSD up front.

Re: New Guy with Hardware Questions
you might want to check out the jags that run sight.
Rbob do you know what the pulse per mile is for tbi?
he could fab up an external tonering for a vss or tap into an oe toyota vss.
do the shafts on toyotas attatch with a bolt on flange or do you have cps, or straps. slip yoke? there is a sight called tonerings.com that can manufacture a tone ring for just about any thing and a ford crank sensor from a 4.6l as the sensor.

Yea, I've checked that site out in the past as i'll be replacing the mechanical speedo with an electronic one in the next few months. The site's got all sorts of gizmos for converting signals etc, I think a few guys running FJ40's with 350's use their gear for the same reason.
Shafts are bolt on, diff is a 4.11.
So for a start you're thinking the best is to get this thing along with an EBL huh?
Don't suppose anyone's got one for sale on here!

Re: New Guy with Hardware Questions
the tbi ecm needs to "see" 4000 pulses per mile. Yes, Rbob sells them. He makes em! and yes it will save you a lot of tuning time. make sure you get it setup for a manual trans. or if your going to use the supplied ecm get the ecm# and the 4 digit broadcast code.
www.dynamicefi.com
if you choose to upgrade to aftermarket guages then all you need is some sort of pulse to the new speedo, then send same signal to ecm and change correction factor in ecm for proper readout to ecm. calibration needed for speedo and ecm seperately basically.

Re: New Guy with Hardware Questions
Just a correction on the VSS: the TBI ECM input is 2000 PPM. It is a square wave input.
The oil pressure switch is used to provide a back up to the fuel pump (FP) relay. The FP will be powered via the oil pressure switch once the oil pressure increases to higher then 4-5 psi. This is done for a fail safe if the relay or ECM driver for the relay goes bad. The FP will stay running.
To get the VE tables into shape an O2 sensor (even a NB) will help a lot. With this being an off-road vehicle it is best to put the sensor as high as possible. IOW, not down under the vehicle. But up near the engine. Can also run a 1-wire that way. This is so streams & such don't flood the sensor.
