Re: What is this for?

It looks like the coolant temp sensor.
Back the camera up a foot or so to get a better picture.

Re: What is this for?

i agree, it's the coolant fan switch if it's the passenger side (looks like a starter to me). should be on the other side of the head by the spark plugs if it's what we're speaking about.

As mentioned, if it's in the passenger side head, it kicks the coolant fan relay/ECU a signal to engage the radiator fan, only way to bypass this is with a switch to activate it, or leave your a/c in the on position at all times otherwise your car will endefinally overheat as those two things will turn the rad. fan on.

Re: What is this for?

You can get a new one at a auto store for dirt cheap, and it looks like the clip is fine so all you really need to do is get a new temp sensor
http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductD...pe=290&PTSet=A
or you can go after market - good luck

Re: What is this for?

yeah its much cheaper to buy a whole fan when it goes out from constantly being run plus the gas you'll be wasting cause it'll take longer for the car to warm up and you will be in open loop.
