open element?
open element?
I have a cowl hood and I want to put an open element on my 305 TBI to make the cowl hood functional. I have already read the sticky on how to change it, but my question is can I use an open element. I wanted to get a k&n with the xtream flow lid, but I want to make sure it will fit on my car. I know I will need to change the stud because I plan on going bigger than the stock air cleaner to get it to sit inside the cowl. Any help would be appreciated? Also, if anyone has any ideas as to how to seal off the cowl, that would be great too. I was thinking of using an aluminum cake pan and dynamatting it to make it more heat resistant.

Re: open element?
ya it should fit, a buddy of mine put one on his 350. but he has a stock hood. I had to drill the holes for the sensors on my open element go go inside the filter, wasnt a big problem tho. If you want any pics of my setup just ask.

Re: open element?

installation is easy, just drill the holes for your sensors, and you will have to buy a breather for the crankcase otheriwse you can use the old filter and tube setup. Easier to go with a breather and it looks better. I still have to buy one myself.

Re: open element?
you can go to a local autozone or adavance auto parts and buy the whole open element setup and then just buy a k&n filter. the setup comes with a new top and base and a paper filter. will fit with no fabrication just need to remount the air temp sensor and whatever the other sensor is.

Re: open element?
ya i believe they do. im not shure who much it is tho. I only spent 70 bucks for my entire setup, 30 for the kit and 40 for the new filter.
Re: open element?
Awesome thanks. I think the hardest part of the job for me is going to be trying to seal if off inside of the cowl. Like I mentioned earlier, I am going to try to use an aluminum cake pan I think. So I will probably need to cut a hole in the bottom of the cake pan and try to somehow mount the base of the open element to that and then put a rubber seal on the top of the cake pan to seal it against the hood.

Hey, TA daily driver, is that air cleaner of yours the flat base, or drop base model?
