Confused - should I swap TBI for TPI or not?

I know questions like these come up, but here's my situation:

I have a 91 RS 305 with T-5, edelbrock TES, no cat, and 3" Flowmaster cat-back. I have installed a 3.73 gear with auburn posi. I have purchased a set of World Products S/R Torquer 305 heads, an LT-1 cam, 1.5 roller rockers, and a complete TPI setup with 91 SD harness.

I already have the moates ostrich and do my own tuning.

I plan on swapping the heads and cam first, tuning the car, and putting on the TPI after I change the fuel pump - probably this fall - and then learning to tune the 730 ECM.

My question (dilema) is that I've read so mauch about how the TPI potentially chokes down a motor. If I do the cam and heads will the TPI actually be stepping backwards?

One other question, should I get an aftermarket cam (like the crane 2032) instead of the LT-1 cam?

If I stay TBI, what intake works good with my combo?

I'm not wanting a monster motor (or I'd build a 350+), just a nicer driver that could maybe break 14's on street tires (maybe 250-260 hp at the flywheel). I don't have an unlimited budget, but I'm not broke either.

Any and all help is appreciated.

I had a simialar setup and when I put in the LT1 cam and tuneport, it ran 14.94@92 with the junk TBI heads.

With exhaust + lt1 cam Im already out of fuel. You probably better of upgrading fuel pump and AFPR at the same time, wich will allow u to tune it properly.

Hope you will swap S/R heads and lt1 cam soon, so you can answer some hp/rpm questions I have

This tread may have some interesting info about TPI vs TBI.
I have been suggested to keep it tbi wenn i got my bird.

You can get into the 14's with your TBI all day long, even with your stock heads. Tuning is where it's at when it comes to this. With what you have minus the tpi setup you'll be there easily. IMHO I would just port the stockers and leave the Torquers be. A good intake would be either a Edelbrock 3704 bored out to 50mm or a Edelbrock RPM. I would stay away from Air gap style intakes because TBI likes a warm manifold for better fuel atomization. Some people run the Weiand 7525 I think. I haven't heard many bad things about it yet.

Here's a good setup for what you want.
Ultimate tbi mods
Lt1 cam
port the stockers
gears
intake
a good fuel pump
and a tune.

I believe that will get you where you want to go (250-260 bhp) and you won't have to spend a buttload of money. If you want alittle more some giggle juice goes a long way.

Re: Confused - should I swap TBI for TPI or not?

Thanks guys.

I've already got the gears in (biggest kick in the pants to date, actually!) and I already own the heads, so they're for sure going on.

Thomas - the thread you mentioned is one of the ones that have me wondering about the TPI system. I always felt that since it was designed for a 305 originally that it would be adequate. However Dewey316 (and Fast355) have got me thinking about the rpm limitation a TPI can have.

It also didn't help that I got the TPIS "Insider Hints" book from TPIS with the chart showing a TPI motor with a carb on it. The carb gave the stock TPI motor something like 60 or 70 horsepower in the 5000+ range. Here again, that's not the rpm range I would drive in everyday - but sometimes it is. Also, that was a 350, so the same airflow should let the smaller motor turn a few more RPM's (I hope).

I do have an AFPR for the TBI, but I haven't put it on yet because I don't have a gauge.

Also sounds like I need a fuel pump already - which one (walbro 190 or 255)?

The stock TPI or walbro 190 should be fine for 300+hp.

Re: Confused - should I swap TBI for TPI or not?

If you ask if people think you should keep tbi on the tbi board your answers are most likely going to favor keeping tbi, thats pretty obvious. It depends what you want, if you just want to get into 14s, thats easy to do with a tbi, lt1 cam, mild intake work, and a good exhaust will get you 14s, with a little head work and really good tune it wouldnt at all be a suprise to be deep int 14s, 14.3, or 2ish, with good traction. If you already have a tpi pump, that would be fine, but for the money Id go with the 255.
