i'm sure whoever told you that is a guru and can make a car faster by looking at it since you know the open air element hasn't been used since man threw a big motor in it and called it a race car....yeah definitely worthless because there still making them and so many people are still using them.......if you cant hence my sarcasm im just gonna stop.....throw a k&n high flow in there and MAYBE go to a 360 round one 3-4in depending on your hood no drop base (defeats the air flow purpose) btw i use one on mine.....\
can you send me an 8x10 autographed glossy of the car god that told you "it catches on fire" lol

If the engine backfires out the intake the foam element does burn/melt. This is a common problem with carb setups. EFI rarely backfires (on occasion they do).
If your engine/tune is OK and there isn't any backfiring then try it out.
RBob.

Re: What air system should i go with?
It may seem funny but if you do get a backfire it will melt as much as burn. You want that on top of what is going into the engine. I had one on my first car [63 Impala] It did exactly what I mentioned. Not good and had to be replaced. Like Rbob said it is more of a problem on carbed applications that are prone to backfire.
On the other hand if they had a k&n type material that is fire proof it seems to breath very well and on the last parts car I purchased it was the only filter that the previous owner found that would fit with the hi rise intake some DA installed.
