Will this truck air cleaner, fit my 92 firebird tbi? The guy from summit wasn't sure if the truck tbi, is the same as my car. Any help would be appreciated.

it should work truck tbi's i beleave had the same dimensions

 

may not clear the hood though. i seem to remember that the trucks have a taller lid.

Is there anyway to know for sure if it will clear? Someone here must of bought one previously.

 

Why on earth is that air cleaner 150$? The bases and tops of all air cleaners are the same arent they? besides a drop and non drop base? I would never pay that much for an air cleaner.

The easy way to tell if it will fit, if that is just a normal air cleaner would be to go to an autoparts store and buy the top and bottom and a bigger filter, throw it on there, see if it works, and if it does keep it, if it doesnt return it.
that is if no one has put a filter like that with a ram air hood.

 

that was me being sarcastic. im pretty sure all but the tallest filters will clear that hood.

 

I believe the truck air cleaners have 2 studs where as the cars have one, I may be wrong, but I have a 305 TBI Camaro and my neighbor had a 350 TBI truck.

 

i have a 305 tbi and also have a 1993 silverado 350 tbi. the silverado i have has two studs but alot of them have single studs . so far from what ive done they fit the same except for the fact of there being two studs.

 

I thought the price was high too. I would like to know for sure if it will fit. I may just have to call summit again.

 

I just called K & N and they informed me that it would NOT fit. Someone here must have found one somewhere I have seen them on vehicles here, any help would be great.

 

just get any old 14" aircleaner w/o a drop base, then lose the spacer on top of the TBI. with a 3" element, you should have plenty of clearance.

 

Just go to your local autozone or advance auto parts and pick up the edelbrock air filter with base kit and it will fit right in there with nor problem. Will only cost you MAYBE 35 bucks. I went ahead and bought the biggest K&N air filter i could but since im putting a TBI spacer on i need to go smaller now. ill get the part # for you so you know what kit to get.

 

thats exactly what i did on my 92 RS. only problem is the dropbase and TBI spacer isn't the best for flow.

 

yeah i dont like the dop base on mine. Im thinking of making my own or just buying a flat one.

 

I am looking for one like there is on the link on my first post. Could I just chop the sides of my current air cleaner,lol...there got to be someway for my 305 tbi to have open element.

I have a non drop base cleaner with 3 inch K&N filter on my camaro, i have a 3 inch cowl and there is a ton of room. Find yourself a speed shop in your area, i had a drop base air cleaner on there from wal mart, no name brand. there all the same its just two pieces of metal, finding a non-drop base seemed to be harder for me till i walked into my local speed shop, asked for just the base, he charged me 10$ and i walked out the door with it, popped my hood, and slapped it on.

 

I know it would be a bit more, but why not take advantage of that hood you have and do a ram air setup?

If not, I have done what s107.5 said. Just get the non drop base, lose the spacer, and go to your local part store and test fit with a regular paper filter to see how tall you can go if you want taller than 3".

I took a piece of thick rubber and draped it over the dizzy to prevent arc to the air cleaner.

 

Getting ram air is what i wanted to do, but again i have a tbi and i cannot find an air box. i have no idea where to find a non drop base. only parts store around here is canadian tire which will not have one. could i buy one online?

 

SUM-239431. thats the part number from summit of the air cleaner i used on my car. my car is exactly the same as yours minus the RAM AIR II hood and it fits just fine. the very front of the air cleaner just touches the hood insulation.

 

Is that all I need, or is there something else, ie: drop base?

 

how about the ram air box from Hawks, and then get one of those carb plenums from pepboys?

 

thats a flat base. and thats all you'll need.

thats exactly what you need. everything is there for installation. You will def. hear a difference in the engine when you tromp it.

 

sure about that? that one has a raised base instead of a flat one. although i think it'll be alright with the RAM AIR II hood.

 

I have the raised base top and mine fits just fine under the stock Trans am hood. And i have a 3" k&N filter. The only thing that touches the hood is the wing nut it put a small hole in the hood insulation.

i understand its "TPI ONLY", but haven't you seen TBI Camaros with TPI intakes on them? just use a little imagination. all it takes is a carb hat, and a little 3" tubing.

 

No idea how to do it.... any pics around??

 

If you want to combine a TPI and a TBI air inatke system together go on ebay and type in 305 TBI into the search and it will come up with a cold air intake system. It comes with the the tubing that goes over the TB and you could move it to face foward then attach the ram air tubing to it.

I am still having no luck with the tbi ebay search. Anyone have a "home" version of the tbi airbox?
