Car Going Dead! Please Help!
Since I bought my 92 firebird, It has had a problem. When It would get to about a quarter of a tank of gas and I'd hit the brakes, the engine would go dead. As long as I had gas in it, it was fine though. Today it went dead several times and had plenty of gas. It even tried going dead on the highway. I had to pump the gas pedal. My guess is that my fuel pump is messed up and I need another one. I could be very wrong though.. Please help!
Thanks
Wes

Fuel pump is in the tank the fuel filter is under the drivers side of the car. Replace the fuel filter first, its cheap and easy and may be the problem.

I replaced the fuel filter sometime last year. So I doubt it is the filter.. I guess I'll end up dropping the tank.. Let me know if it could be something else though.

Sounds like a vacuum leak if your car dies or stalls when applying the brakes. With the engine running, spray some carb cleaner or wd-40 around engine, vacuum hose, and base of tbi. If your rpm changes then you definitely have a vacuum leak. Try it before dropping your fuel tank. May even want to put a bottle of heat in the gas tank incase water maybe present.

I agree with the vacuum leak. The power booster has a vacuum check valve. I've had one crack which can cause a massive vacuum leak. Can be as simple as the grommet it sits into also. I don't know why having more gas in the tank would help though.

no vacuum leaks. Next I will try some gas treatment to see if there is any water in my tank.

Have you checked your fuel pressure yet? That might give you a good idea of whether your fuel pump is on it's way out or not.

Re: Car Going Dead! Please Help!
I checked for vacuum leaks with the brake on and off and did not find one.
My fuel pressure is fine until I get to a quarter of a tank and hit the brakes.. I can't figure it out. I filled up with gas and put a bottle of iso heat in the tank. I think it has water in it, or the in-tank pickup could be messed up. I won't know for a couple of days if I still have the problem or not.. hopefully not, but I am not usually that lucky lol. I'll post what it does when I get down to a quarter of a tank. If it could be anything else be sure to let me know.
Thanks again for all of your help
