350 build to replace my tired old L03, advice needed
My old 305 is making all kinds of knocking/grinding noises, so I've decided to build a new 350 as a replacement. I've set my goals on what I want my project to be, but still need some help selecting parts.
What I'm trying to do:
1. Reuse as many parts from the 305 as possible (TBI, intake, accessories, etc)
2. Make it run decently on the 9C1 Prom until I can do my own tuning
3. Decent power, 280-320FWHP, nothing too extreme (fuel economy is also important). Basically the max that an ultimate TBI modded TBI can flow
4. Most importantly, do this on a budget
I already have a #10066036 casting 350 block w/ 4 bolt mains (bought it for $100
), so my build will be centered around that. It is currently stock bore, but I will have it bored .030
It's a 2pc rear seal, so I was looking at this crank: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=200244026298
Also will be buying this rebuild kit: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
It does not include rods, I will be reusing the stock connecting rods, I got them with the block
So here are my questions:
I still need a cam, lifters, and timing chain, but not sure what to get. I believe they make complete sets (cam and lifters and chain), but not sure what cam specs to get to make it run decently with TBI and be easy to tune. I'm also pretty sure this is a non-roller block
Heads: same thing, still not sure what to get. I know I need something 1987 or later so I can bolt up my TBI intake, but what can be found relatively easy and cheap that will still flow well? Looking for ~64cc combustion chamber size
Also, will my stock flexplate bolt up to the 2pc crank? What about all the other accessories?

gratz on your $100 Target Master/Goodwrench block
if you are concerned with optimal fuel economy you might want to get an EBL all the same to have everything correctly tuned.
the flexplates & flywheels used on 1pc rear main (86 & up) differ from the ones used with the 2pc rear main (pre-86) blocks.
dunno about the heads, but the change in 86/87 also included, as you already stated, a different pattern for the mounting bolts of the intake manifold (90° vs 73°), along with the centerbolt valve cover mounting pattern.
can't tell you if the head design was changed as well because of the centerbolt/perimeter design..
well, i'm sure there are users on the board that are much more experienced with this but i thought i'll give it a try xD good luck with the 350!

Well I've been looking around some more on the net and making some phone calls, I got a friend who will sell me some rebuilt 081 heads for cheap (also $100
)
So:
In order to keep the compression from being too high, I'm going to stick with the stock style dished pistons instead of flat-tops and a thick head gasket, will that be enough to run on 91 octane? So this rebuild kit instead: http://store.summitracing.com/partde...0&autoview=sku
Also suggestions for a hydraulic flat tappet cam that will work with the 081 heads w/o machine work (believe max lift for 081's is .480"???) and easy to tune for TBI
Just remember that I'm on a super tight budget but I have a lot of free time, I'm trying to do this cheap but am willing to do a lot of research/reading as well as take my time during the build-up (I've been working on cars all my life, but this is my first engine build, I've already read the "how to rebuild an SBC" book from autozone cover to cover, twice), last thing I want to do is waste my money by buying the wrong parts or rushing the build
I'm also going to get a second opinion on whether or not the block needs to be bored before I do it, otherwise I'll just get it honed, replace the rings and re-use the stock pistons (I have the 036 block, pistons, rods, and oil pan), I've cleaned them up and they're in excellent condition

Would something like this valvetrain kit work?

Just out of sheer curiosity what type of budget are you working with?

As little as I have to spend, I'm a college student, waiting tables and fixing people's cars and computers for cash, trying to pay rent, bills, food, car insurance...
So will 081 heads work on this engine with dished pistons and a thick head gasket? Is the cam I posted above good?
Finally, I noticed this block has a place for a mechanical fuel pump, can I just make a flat plate to block this off? There's a tube thing inside, I just remove this?
