fuel pump maybe? A little long sorry.

I bought an '89 "E" IROC for my son at an auction. I drove it home 15 miles with little issues until I got a 1/2 mile from the house. Thats when it started to cut out. I got it home. I took the Alt. and battery to have them checked and the local parts counter people said both were good. keep in mind the battery was fully charged at the auto parts for the test. I've left my son drive it around locally but not much because the thing started to cut out again. The car idled high at 2500 rpm. Then When I press on the gas the car cuts out and stumbles bad. Fuel filter was the first thing I changed. the filter was clogged, I couldn't get any air through it at all. I broke the gas line while changing the filter too. I spliced in a repair kit. I took the car on a test run but the car had the same issue. Now when I bought the car it didn't have an exhaust system from the Cat. back. When I repaired the fuel filter I also put on an exhaust. The last time I drove the car I got into the throttle and the stumbling / cutting out increased and then it just "coughed" and stopped running. I managed to get the car to start again but it sounded like it was running on 1 cylinder. Now the car won't turn over or anything, even with jumper cables on the battery. The distributor, rotor and plugs are new. A few other things; The ignition switch is bad (but the key still activates everything else) and the previous owner put a toggle switch in to start it with. The electric fan is wired to come on with the key. And the dash gauges seem to read a little off. The code flashes 44, but the check engine light recently came on during the last test drive. Any Ideas? I'm thinking the fuel pump might be bad (I really don't want to drop the tank to find out it's something else). The battery might be getting drained some how, or the exhaust might be causing some type of back pressure issues. I consider myself a "half fast" shadetree mechanic, but I've never had a Chevy before, let a lone an Iroc. Sorry about the long post for my first but I want to be thorough. Thanks in advance.

check the fuel pump relay and oil pressure switch first. look at the connection under the car in front of the tank. this el;ectrical coonection can get dirty or damaged over time. also check the fuel pump fuse next to the battery. see if the connnection is good and wires are not corroded. look for vacumn leaks and see if the fuel injectors are working. all these things can be done in half the time it takes to drop the tank

Get a fuel pressure gauge prior to anything. Might be the pump, relay, or just the 3" piece of rubber hose that connects the pump to the hard line inside the tank.

My last fuel problem had symptoms similar to yours and it was the rubber line. Put a gauge on it. You can get them at Autozone ect. Just make sure it has the adapter for TBI. It should be around 13. Mine was at 9 and that was not enough to keep the car running.
