Re: service engine codes
Autozone has a "key", but it is really just an uncut key, with 2 prongs. My local Autozones give them away all the time.
And code 12 is "All Clear, No Errors)
Look on..... Error Codes The codes are there.

Re: service engine codes
The only exception where OBD reads in word is on a Tech1, for some ungodly reason my instructor has 5 of the ancient things.
Moral of the story, unless you want an archaic tool laying around, use a paper clip, stick it between the 2 terminals, watch the lights and count em up

OR YOU CAN USE YOUR DECODER RING
No need to fool around with paper clips.
They make hand held code readers.
Just plug it into your ALDL
It will show any active trouble codes, translate those numbers into words, read (independently from your gages) RPM, volts, temps, what your ECM is thinking and much more.
You can monitor performance while youre driving and look at it real time or record it to look at it while stopped.

Re: OR YOU CAN USE YOUR DECODER RING
This is prob the most common code reader for OBD1
Actron CP9001 GM OBD I Code Scanner $35 ??
But as stated the paper clip is more cost effective

33 MAP SENSOR HIGH
And provides real time sensor data. You can read/see items such as the engine RPM, vehicle speed, MAP value in voltage and KPa as the engine is running.
Not sure why you don't think that ODBI can do this. GM systems have been this way since the advent of CCC setups.
