Backfiring in TBI HELP??

Since, I have a job that requires you to sit in a lot of traffic and clutch is starting to go, I have been driving a my automatic 1993 berretta. Alright...but need some help. Recently I drove my car after sitting for a week or so and sitting in some really rainy days and all of the sudden the car started to stumble and hesitate. When I finally made it home, I cut off the car and looked under the hood. Then I went to start the car back up and it had a really hard time to turn over. Then, when I started it ran really bad. I went to dinner and went to look at it the next day it ran fine (like nothing was wrong). But again today, it is back to doing the same thing. When I give it any gas when in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and especially 5th it just stumbles and pops in the tbi and sounds maybe the exhaust too.

Also, I noticed that when I took off the Open element that when I revered it up. A flame pops from it. Any one have any ideas???

It’s a 1991 tbi 305 with 130k. only thing done is: full exhaust and the open element.

Based on your description most likely your fuel pump is going out or you have clogged Fuel filter. Check your fuel pressure - there is no test port on TBI. You can temporarily remove fuel filter and insert T adapter for Fuel Pressure test gauge. TBI needs about 13 to 15 PSI give or take.

It is all to common for these car to develop a leaky inside gas tank hose between fuel pump outlet port and bulkhead.

Re: Backfiring in TBI HELP??

alright...thanks for the help. Also I have been busy so its been sitting in the garage and the car smells bad of gas. let me know because i plan to look at that and change the spark plugs and distributor wires and cap to give it a tune up. Are the tbi injectors prone to have problems???

An 18 year old car is prone to have problems, but for the most part they are easily correctable. TBI injectors may get dirty over time, but more less are reliable (they do go bad). TBI tend to have gas leaks in the back of the unit next to the fuel inlets due to crashed washers. This is due to overtightening, which in a worst case may lead to a cracked TB housing. Another source for gas leaks is around injector pod assembly and injector body o-rings. If these pieces are still original modern gas, loaded with MTBE and others additives, over time, tends to harden gasket materials used in TB assembly. If car has been sitting for awhile TB should be cleaned and refreshed with new gaskets.
