305 needs some kick
What are some easy ways to add horsepower to my 305. I really need it. Raced a 93 camaro with a 3.4 V6 and......lost! Is this a normal 305 or is something wrong with mine?

Re: 305 needs some kick
I don't know what the hp difference is between the 92 & 93 Camaro V6's, but there's only 30hp between the L03 & 92 LH0 - and that's if the LO3 is running to spec. Unfortunately, many of the newer V6's put out substantially more hp than our tired stock LO3's. I got tired of being out run by soccer moms in their minivans & suv's, too.
The place to start is a thorough tune up to get as many of the stock 170 ponies as it has left. A set of headers and a cat back are still considered the best bang for the buck upgrade. I found installing a Corvette servo and retuning the governor to get the trans to shift more firmly and more within the lower rpm range that our hp comes in at to be a huge help. The ultimate TBI mods are another low dollar upgrade that helps throttle response.
Beyond that, as far as engine modifications go you're getting into a manifold, cam, and heads.
Dumping the peg leg 2.73 rear gear ratio for a posi 3.23-3.42 rearend will definitely help to put that V6 in it's rightful place ... your rear view mirror!

Get into prom tuning and get the 30 ft/lbs of torque and 10-20 hp that is hiding inside the stock chip.

Re: 305 needs some kick
personally i have found that the following helped me a bit.
L69 dual intake air cleaner
tranny cooler
new polyurethane links and bushings for better handling
new rear with a 3.42
converter lockup switch (search for the tech article)
and some various ultimate TBI upgrades.
wider tires for better grip (265/50 R16)
and lastly a cat back or cutout.
add to that sub frame connectors, headers, cat back, custom prom (not worth it in my opinion), shocks, aftermarket intake, tower brace, and refreshing of the suspension and your good to go.
add it all together and its the price of a 350. lol.

The Corvette servo increases the force applied to second gear, which firms up the 1-2 shift. Here's one of many sources for a Corvette servo:
http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000035952.htm
Here are some great instructions w/ pics on installing it. I suggest pulling the distributor cap and lowering the rear of the trans to make the job easier.
http://s-series.org/component/option...m,6/task,item/
To further increase the firmness of the shifts, a .471 or .500 TV boost valve can be installed to increase the fluid line pressure. But, it's a bit more work. For one, you have to drop the tranny pan and get the existing valve out - which can be difficult (or impossible I've read) w/o a good set of snap ring pliers. I haven't actually done this mod myself, yet. Here's the same vendor's page w/ the boost valves.

This and other sites also sell shift governor reprogramming kits. I did mine on my own because it appeared to me the kits were more designed to raise the shift points instead of lowering them. The last thing I wanted to do was raise the shift points on my basically stock LO3. If you feel your 1-2 shift is occurring too late (the engine is over revving before it occurs), lowering the shift point makes a world of difference. PM me if you want details on how I did it.
Like the Ultimate TBI Mods found on this site, these modifications are inexpensive and easy enough to do on your own. They definitely make an improvement in performance.
That said, I stand by the suggestions of my earlier post (tune up, headers, catback, etc.). Let your budget and ability to do the mods on your own determine the order you implement them.

Re: 305 needs some kick
I will have the same problem with my gf's firebird that I did a topend job on. But I ported the snot out of the intake and the heads and matched the gaskets and its a 3.4. I know her car will be fast for a v6 bird but I will be damned if I make her car faster than mine :again:.... I will reduce the exhaust down to 1.5 for like a foot in her car just to keep it in its place below my L03.
