How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
I just called up Lindertech to get a quote for rebuilding the tbi with a afpr and injector spacer and he told me $350. That is about a $200 labor charge. No way.
So I am thinking rebuild it myself and put the afpr and spacer on. What do I need to know? How hard is it to put the afpr on? I know I need the kit, torque wrench, carb cleaner, and something like tranny fluid to lube the o-rings.
By the way, how do I detach the throttle linkage from the tbi?

its not hard to do at all maybe a 2 hour job why your there you should shave the throttle bores. you need silicone lube for o rings, and the throttle linkage is held on by a little clip just use needle nose pliers and pull it off. everything else is pretty self explanatory. just lay it all out on a table and when you take out the screws put them in the hole you took them out of. it looks intimidating but when i did mine i had no background on it what so ever. make sure you use alot of silicone lube or else you will crack your injector pod. i learned the hard way lucky i have three tbi units around.

Thanks a lot. Does the kit come with instructions, or did you follow your Haynes or Chilton's manual?

ya it comes with instructions there pretty easy to follow to but the most important thing is keep it organized and clean so you dont mix anything up other than that im pretty sure your set unless anyone else wants to add anything

Did you stick with the stock fuel pressure regulator?

Are you buying the AFPR? I remember coming across a write up someone had done on here to make your own from the stock regulator. Requires drilling out a small spot weld and tapping the reg. Really easy job to do and costs next to nothing if you've got the tools already. I went this route myself and pocketed the rest of the money to put toward other mods.

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
Rebuilding a TBI was the first thing I did on my car, way back when I just got it and I didn't know jack about cars. I didn't re-bush the throttle shaft, but did everything else including the FPR diaphragm/spring.
Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
A TBI should be a lot easier to rebuild than a quadrajet, which I have done with someones help. I'm thinking about rebuilding mine for the hell of it.
What type of things wear out in a TBI and what kinds of problems can they cause? Mine has 305K miles on it and I have most of the service records and it doesn't look like anything has been done to anything in the fuel system.

I have gone a little different route. I am going with a modified unit. But, I still have to basically rebuild it. I just got the throttle body only on today.

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
I have a question about checking fuel pressure. A good pressure for what I have done so far would be about 13 or 13.5. So, how do I test this accurately? I have an AFPR installed and pictures of my new setup will be up.
Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
I use the actron CP7817 to test the fuel pressure. http://www.actron.com/product_detail.php?pid=16175.
As far as other things to check for on a TBI that has 300k miles, I would have the throttle shaft rebushed for sure. If it is significanly worn it could be a source for a vacuum leak. I would also have the injectors cleaned. Not the put in your tank cleaner, I mean the ultrasonic type cleaning. Since you will have everything apart you might as well make sure the injectors are nice and clean and metering the fuel correctly. I had mine done about six months ago and it cost about $25 a piece at the local carb shop that had the equipment. If you don't have anyone local that can do it I know Turbo City offers the service as well. http://www.turbocity.com/product_inf...roducts_id=563 as well as throttle body rebushing.

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
Well, injectors have already been serviced, it's a refurbished and modified throttle body, and I have a gauge with the adapter. All is done and I am just wondering about checking the fuel pressure.

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
Nice, i bought a 46mm refurbished throttle body for $199 no core charge from xtreme-fi on ebay, I cleaned up the injectors and pod, and put in new gaskets and o-rings, also going in is a AFPR and a gauge with adapter.
High Flow bored TBI throttle body – 590CFM o590 CFM bored 46mm TBI throttle body w/ rebuilt throttle shaft, ultimate TBI modifications
oNew throttle plates, grade 8 (military quality) hardware - throttle blade material may vary from photos
oRebuilt throttle shaft replaces your worn out unit and cures that high/hunting idle
oThis is basically the same unit TurboCity/CFM-Tech sells for $379.99 after core charge (only ours is better and includes more for less money and no core charge
Not a bad deal, what did you set your full pressure too 92 Camaro? personally i dont have a lot of mods done yet so I'll probably set it around 15

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
15 is too high. actually, you won't even have room to set it that high even with an injector spacer. I tried to set it at 13.5, but I think it was reading just slightly under that even when I adjusted it.

Re: How hard is it to rebuild a TBI unit?
May be true.
Nothing a TPI fuel pump and some bigger flowing injectors can't solve tho.
But atm it's not really needed, 13.5 should be fine with me.
