How to replace knock sensor in 88 305 tbi firebird
Long story short my dad replaced the starter and broke the knock sensor. He bought a new one and now with the starter in he can't getthe old one out. It's a funny size and he can't find anything to fit it. Anyone have any help for him.

Should be a 22mm.
However if the integral nut is deformed race shops have sockets with built in spring loaded pins that allow you to grip irregular/deformed nuts, then ejects the nut.
Great for pit-stop-repairs ► less socket changing.

that should come out with the starter in place, use a long extension and as far as a socket to fit it ,find a 6 pt that almost fits and put the extension on and hit it with a hammer (not too hard) till it gets on the sensor and it should grab .

Since its been on there for a while, hit it up with some penetrating oil (PB Blaster or similar). Sensors usually hate moving after being in place for a while and since its a bit of a pain to get out, I'd use any trick I could. 6-point is definitely the way to go since the nut is part of the housing and not quite as heavy duty as your standard bolt head.

the resister is not a great idea, find a socket to fit the new one and then bang it over the old sensor,it will be a tight fit because the old one is rusty and or deformed or swollen.this is not the end of the world, you can drive the car without the sensor for a short period of time unless you hear pinging.
